How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The universal coefficient theorem for cohomology over a PID
Statement
Assume the Axiom of Choice. Let be a PID, a chain complex of free -modules, and an -module. Then naturally is exact.
Proof
Given: The Axiom of Choice, the free PID-complex , an -module , the evaluation map, and the cycle-boundary sequences. Choice is used to make arbitrary-rank cycle and boundary modules free and then to split the surjections with free targets (The Axiom of Choice, Boundaries and cycles in a free complex over a PID are free, Free modules are projective, with the exact choice boundary).
Under the stated Choice hypothesis, is free and projective. Choose a section of the corestricted differential and put . For any , the cochain restricts on to , vanishes on , and hence is a cocycle. Its evaluation is , proving surjectivity.
If a cocycle has zero evaluation, then : its restriction factors through , and that induced map is zero. Since has kernel , there is a unique with . Conversely every such is a cocycle because .
The cochain is a coboundary exactly when extends to . Indeed, if for a cochain , surjectivity of onto gives . Conversely, if extends , Choice and projectivity of give a projection ; then is a coboundary. Thus is .
The free presentation identifies this quotient with by Ext via a projective resolution of the first variable. Define the extension map on a representative by ; step 2.1 proves it is well defined and injective, while step 1.2 identifies its image with the evaluation kernel.
Naturality requires no chosen projection: for a chain map , pullback of is , exactly the map induced on the free presentations; a map commutes by postcomposition. Evaluation also commutes with these maps. The chosen projections in steps 1.1 and 2.1 establish existence and exactness only. Thus the displayed sequence is natural.
