How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Finite certified evaluation of the scaled complementary error function

Definition

Input an exact dyadic real x, positive rational absolute tolerance εa, optional positive rational relative tolerance εr, a fixed exponent range (emin⁡,emax⁡), and finite positive integer caps Smax⁡,Dmax⁡,Nmax⁡,pmax⁡,W, with pmax⁡≥2. Here Smax⁡ bounds stages, Dmax⁡ the continued-fraction depth, Nmax⁡ the asymptotic truncation, pmax⁡ the dyadic precision, and W the exact interval operations, terms, and subroutine calls performed by this procedure. Reject nonpositive tolerances, invalid caps, emin⁡>emax⁡, or x≤0 with domain. At stage q, use D=min⁡(q,Dmax⁡), N=min⁡(q,Nmax⁡), precision p=max⁡(2,min⁡(q,pmax⁡)), and truncation index q for elementary-range calls. Outputs and status meanings are those of Certified special-function enclosure result.

All rational and interval arithmetic uses Outward-rounded interval, rectangle and ball operations. Charge every exact arithmetic operation, range-evaluator node operation, term, rounding, and loop update to the shared counter W. Interrupt any nested elementary-range call with inconclusive before its next operation would exceed the remaining budget. Return inconclusive before any local operation would exceed W. A final endpoint overflow returns range. A non-finite required arithmetic operation or elementary-range subcall makes its candidate unavailable; if neither candidate can be formed, the current stage is inconclusive and later stages may still be tried.

For each stage q=1,…,Smax⁡, compute Pq, a finite dyadic interval containing π, as follows. For r∈{1/5,1/239}, form Aq(r)=∑j=0q−1(−1)jr2j+1/(2j+1) and Eq(r)=r2q+1/((2q+1)(1−r2)) exactly; the arctangent-tail lemma gives arctan⁡r∈[Aq(r)−Eq(r),Aq(r)+Eq(r)]. Combine these intervals by π=16arctan⁡(1/5)−4arctan⁡(1/239) and round outward to the selected format at precision p. The Machin identity is supplied by Trigonometric identities, Machin's formula and reduced Taylor tails; the arctangent series and its geometric-tail argument are in Range-reduced exponential, logarithm and arctangent series have certified tails. If the interval conversion is non-finite, skip the stage. Call Certified range evaluation for elementary real and complex functions on the real one-node DAG Pq, using exponent range (emin⁡,emax⁡), precision p, and truncation q. If this call is not finite or its output Rq does not have positive lower endpoint, skip this stage. Otherwise Rq encloses π by Certified real elementary-function evaluations enclose their ranges.

Form the continued-fraction candidate as follows. Set ID=[0,(D+1)/(2x)]. For k=D−1,…,0, set Ik=[k+12(x+sup⁡Ik+1),k+12(x+inf⁡Ik+1)] by outward interval operations. Apply the decreasing map r↦1/(π(x+r)) to I0, evaluating π with Rq, to obtain a candidate interval Cq. The finite-depth containment lemma Finite continued-fraction enclosure for erfcx makes Cq a valid enclosure for every D≥0.

If N≥1, also form the asymptotic candidate. Evaluate SN(x)=1xπ∑k=0N−1(−1)k(1/2)kx2k,BN(x)=1xπ(2N)!4NN!x2N with Rq and exact factorial/rational interval arithmetic. Write the computed sum interval as [s−,s+] and take a nonnegative outward upper endpoint bN for the remainder bound BN. Set Aq=[s−,s++bN] when N is even and Aq=[s−−bN,s+] when N is odd, rounding the final endpoints outward. The signed remainder lemma Signed finite remainder for the erfcx asymptotic expansion makes Aq a valid enclosure.

If both candidates are finite, intersect them when the intersection is nonempty; if it is empty, discard the stage. If only one is finite, use that candidate. Round the selected final endpoints outward to precision p. Return success at the first stage whose radius is at most εa. Set relative_certified to true exactly when relative tolerance was requested, the interval excludes zero, and the contract's relative-radius test passes; a failed relative test does not prevent absolute success. If no stage passes before the finite caps, return inconclusive.

54 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
