How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Perturbed-observation ensemble Kalman filter
Definition
Fix an ensemble size , forecast map , observation map , datum , and observation covariance . The input is a state ensemble , forecast-error draws that are independent across members and of the input ensemble, each with the caller-specified additive model-error law, and observation perturbations under Multivariate normal law, including singular covariance. The observation perturbations are independent across members and independent of the forecast ensemble and forecast-error draws.
-
Forecast each member: .
-
Form predicted observations , means , , and empirical covariance blocks The divisor- convention is part of this algorithm.
-
Form . Since is positive semidefinite and is positive definite, is positive definite. Factor it by Cholesky and solve by triangular solves.
-
Update every member using its perturbed datum:
Return the updated ensemble and its empirical mean and covariance. When , and , giving the usual sample-covariance Kalman gain. This item specifies the perturbed-observation variant; deterministic square-root updates are different finite-ensemble procedures. Finite ensembles in nonlinear models are approximations and carry no general posterior-exactness claim.

Dependency tree · two levels
26 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
