How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Shift-invert and harmonic Ritz extraction with solve and pencil status
Definition
Let , , choose a shift
, and put . This procedure returns candidate
values and their residual data; it asserts no convergence or forward-error
bound. Its branch statuses are available, arnoldi-breakdown,
linear-solve-unavailable, zero-transformed-Ritz-value,
infinite-harmonic-value, projected-pencil-unresolved,
qz-budget-exhausted, and qz-certificate-inconclusive.
Shift-invert branch. This branch requires to be invertible, equivalently
that is not an eigenvalue of by
For a finite-dimensional space, is an eigenvalue of if and only if is not invertible. Its inputs also include a
nonzero starting vector , an integer Arnoldi dimension , a
residual tolerance , and a solve routine. Normalize
. For , request either the exact solution
or a computed vector together with its actual equation
residual . If a requested solve is unavailable, return
linear-solve-unavailable with the residuals already recorded. Set .
For , compute and replace
. Repeat this pass once, adding each second-pass
coefficient to the corresponding . Set . If this
norm is zero, set the current dimension to and stop with status
arnoldi-breakdown; otherwise set . After columns,
set and stop with status available.
When every solve is exact, this is Arnoldi applied to . When any solve
is inexact, the projected matrix is only the one produced from the computed
vectors; the procedure makes no exact-Arnoldi or convergence claim for that
branch.
Compute the Ritz pairs of the current matrix as
in Ritz values and Ritz vectors extracted from the Arnoldi Hessenberg reduction, normalize to unit
norm, and lift . For each , report the transformed candidate
, the lifted vector , and the directly computed
original residual . Mark this candidate accepted exactly
when . If , assign no finite inverse map and mark
that candidate zero-transformed-Ritz-value. To record the solve-error
transfer for a candidate with , request one additional solve
; if it is available, store and alongside
the directly computed residual .
If this additional solve is unavailable, return
linear-solve-unavailable with the candidate and accumulated ledger.
Harmonic Ritz branch. This branch takes a full-column-rank trial basis
, ; it does not require to be
invertible. Form and
Compute an exact column-pivoted QR of as in
Full, reduced, and column-pivoted computational QR factorisations and let
be its exact rank. If , choose with . Then
and . Thus the nonzero row
annihilates for every ; if this matrix were invertible,
right multiplication by its inverse would force , a contradiction.
Hence is singular for every ; return
projected-pencil-unresolved. If has full column rank, then
for every . Thus is positive definite and
the pencil is regular in the convention of
Regular matrix pencils and homogeneous generalized eigenvalues, since
.
Supply a finite QZ sweep budget and tolerance , and run
Finite-budget QZ iteration with homogeneous status and residual output on .
Compute exactly in the mathematical procedure; a finite implementation
must include their formation errors in the perturbation ledger or return
qz-certificate-inconclusive. On qz-computed, require its exact-factor and
local-update certificates; if either is unavailable, return
qz-certificate-inconclusive. With these certificates,
Every finite-budget QZ run returns a status and records unitary transforms and explicit deflations
then records equivalence to a perturbed projected pencil. For each diagonal
index , set and . If
, return projected-pencil-unresolved; if
, report the computed harmonic Ritz value
; if , mark that candidate
infinite-harmonic-value. These are values of the computed perturbed
pencil, with the QZ residual and perturbation ledger retained; no exact-root,
eigenvector, or forward-error claim is made. After processing all diagonal
candidates, return available with the candidate list, its per-candidate
marks, and the residual and perturbation ledger. Map a QZ budget-exhausted status
to qz-budget-exhausted; map a QZ certificate-inconclusive or range-failure
to qz-certificate-inconclusive; map singular-pencil-suspected to
projected-pencil-unresolved.
Depends on
- The Arnoldi process for building an orthonormal basis of a Krylov subspace
- Eigenvalues, eigenvectors, eigenspaces $E_\lambda(T)=\ker(T-\lambda I)$, and the spectrum $\sigma_F(T)$ of an endomorphism
- For a finite-dimensional space, $\lambda$ is an eigenvalue of $T$ if and only if $T-\lambda I$ is not invertible
- Regular matrix pencils and homogeneous generalized eigenvalues
- Ritz values and Ritz vectors extracted from the Arnoldi Hessenberg reduction
- Full, reduced, and column-pivoted computational QR factorisations
- Finite-budget QZ iteration with homogeneous status and residual output
- Every finite-budget QZ run returns a status and records unitary transforms and explicit deflations
