How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Matrix variance need not dominate trace covariance times operator norm
Statement refuted
For every centered square-integrable random vector with finite fourth moment, the matrix variance is at least , where .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The covariance, matrix-variance, and operator-norm definitions in Covariance matrix of a finite-dimensional random vector, Matrix variance for covariance estimation, and The operator norm is zero on the zero domain and otherwise is max_{||v||=1} ||Tv||.
Covariance matrix of a finite-dimensional random vector: for a centered vector, .
The operator norm is zero on the zero domain and otherwise is max_{||v||=1} ||Tv||: the operator norm is the maximum of over unit vectors.
Real spectral theorem: a self-adjoint endomorphism of a finite-dimensional real inner product space has an orthonormal eigenbasis: a real symmetric matrix has an orthonormal eigenbasis, so the operator norm of a diagonal symmetric matrix is the largest absolute diagonal entry.
Counterexample
In , let take values with total probability (each sign has probability ), and with total probability (each sign has probability ). Symmetry gives , and finite support gives a finite fourth moment.
Direct summation and [F1] give , hence and by [F4].
The value of is on the first pair and on the second, so Its operator norm is by [F4]. Thus the statement is false.
Remarks
This refutes the auxiliary inequality used in Minsker–Wei, Corollary 5.1, for arbitrary dependent coordinates. It does not by itself refute their covariance-estimator theorem; another argument or corrected hypotheses would be needed.

Dependency tree · two levels
12 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
