How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The hook-divisibility vanishing criterion
Statement
Let be a prime (Prime and composite integers: is prime when and its only positive divisors are and ) and . If no hook length of (Hook, arm, leg, and hook length of a box) is divisible by , then for every -singular permutation , i.e. every whose order is divisible by (The order of a finite group and the order of an element, with when no positive power of is the identity). By the hook length formula (The hook length formula), the hypothesis is equivalent to . No converse and no modular block classification is claimed. No choice principle is used.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A prime , a partition , and a -singular permutation , with the character of the complex Specht module (Column antisymmetrizers, polytabloids, and Specht modules).
Order and cycle lengths: if the disjoint cycles of have lengths , then the order of is the least positive natural number divisible by every ; in particular each divides the order (The order of a permutation is the least positive common multiple of its nontrivial cycle lengths, with value for the identity, Support, fixed points, disjoint cycles, cycle length, disjoint-cycle decompositions, and cycle type).
Euclid's property of a prime: for , is prime if and only if implies or ; and if then for some (For an integer : is prime if and only if, for all integers and , implies or , If a prime divides a finite product of integers then for some ; at the product is and the hypothesis cannot hold).
Cancellation in : implies for integers and (The integers have no zero divisors; multiplicative cancellation).
Hook lengths and vanishing: has a removable border strip of size if and only if some hook length of equals . If no hook length equals , then for every containing a cycle of length (A missing removable strip of the cycle length forces a zero character value, Hook, arm, leg, and hook length of a box).
Hook length formula: , so (The hook length formula).
Proof
Let be the order of the -singular permutation , so , and let be its cycle lengths, each dividing by [F1]. Then some is divisible by : otherwise for every , and writing with and , fix ; from write ; by [F2] the divisibility together with gives , say , and cancelling by [F3] gives , so . Thus would be a positive integer, smaller than the order , divisible by every cycle length , contradicting the minimality in [F1]. Hence contains a cycle of some length with .
By the hook length formula [F5], ; since is prime, holds if and only if for at least one node , by the finite-product form of Euclid's property [F2], while the converse divisibility is immediate from a product being a multiple of each factor. Hence if and only if no hook length of is divisible by .
Assume no hook length of is divisible by , and let be the cycle length of with found in step 1.1. Then no hook length of equals , since such a hook length would be divisible by ; by [F4] the character vanishes, . Step 1.2 identifies this hypothesis with , so the criterion holds in both equivalent forms.
Remarks
-
What is not claimed. No converse is proved here and no block theory is used: membership in a block of defect zero is a statement about the decomposition matrix, which this corollary does not construct. The criterion here is only the implication from the absence of a -divisible hook length to vanishing on -singular classes.
-
The arithmetic inputs. Step 1.1 uses Euclid's property and minimality of the order to find a cycle length divisible by . Step 1.2 uses the finite-product form of Euclid's property to identify the equivalent hook-product hypothesis.
Depends on
- A missing removable strip of the cycle length forces a zero character value
- The order of a permutation is the least positive common multiple of its nontrivial cycle lengths, with value $1$ for the identity
- For an integer $p > 1$: $p$ is prime if and only if, for all integers $a$ and $b$, $p \mid ab$ implies $p \mid a$ or $p \mid b$
- If a prime $p$ divides a finite product $\prod_{i<n} a_i$ of integers then $p \mid a_i$ for some $i < n$; at $n = 0$ the product is $1$ and the hypothesis cannot hold
- The integers have no zero divisors; multiplicative cancellation
- The hook length formula
- Hook, arm, leg, and hook length of a box
- Prime and composite integers: $p$ is prime when $p > 1$ and its only positive divisors are $1$ and $p$
- The order $|G|$ of a finite group and the order $\operatorname{ord}(g)$ of an element, with $\operatorname{ord}(g) = \infty$ when no positive power of $g$ is the identity
- Support, fixed points, disjoint cycles, cycle length, disjoint-cycle decompositions, and cycle type
- Column antisymmetrizers, polytabloids, and Specht modules
- The finite symmetric group $S_n$, one-line notation, and cycle notation
