How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Conditional convergence of the diagonal-diffusion scheme under comparison
Statement
For a sequence of diagonal-diffusion grid schemes satisfying the hypotheses of Half-relaxed limits of the monotone diagonal-diffusion HJB scheme, suppose in addition that the exact periodic Cauchy problem Periodic diagonal controlled-diffusion HJB Cauchy problem has a comparison principle for bounded upper semicontinuous subsolutions and bounded lower semicontinuous supersolutions with ordered relaxed initial traces. Then the upper and lower half-relaxed limits coincide, define the unique bounded continuous viscosity solution, and the spatially interpolated numerical solutions converge locally uniformly on to it. This corollary is conditional on the stated second-order comparison property; it does not supply or assert that property.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The half-relaxed stability statement and the comparison hypothesis in the corollary.
The upper limit is a bounded USC subsolution and the lower limit is a bounded LSC supersolution with the same initial data, and (Half-relaxed limits of the monotone diagonal-diffusion HJB scheme).
The stated comparison principle applies to this periodic coefficient class for the bounded semicontinuous sub- and supersolutions in [F1], with their relaxed initial ordering. This is an explicit conditional hypothesis, not a result proved on this page (Periodic diagonal controlled-diffusion HJB Cauchy problem, Second-order parabolic viscosity subsolutions and supersolutions).
The set definitions of the relaxed limits imply that if both envelopes equal a continuous function on a compact set, then a finite subcover of nearby upper and lower bounds proves uniform convergence there (Half-relaxed limits of a locally bounded family, Heine-Borel in : with the Euclidean metric a subset of is compact if and only if it is closed and bounded, and the proof by bisection uses no choice principle; the same holds on the real line).
Proof
Apply [A1] to the upper subsolution and lower supersolution supplied by [F1]. Their common initial trace gives the required ordering, hence . Together with the reverse inequality in [F1], this proves equality.
The common function is both upper and lower semicontinuous by [F1], hence continuous. It is both a viscosity subsolution and supersolution, so is a viscosity solution with the prescribed initial data. Comparison in [A1] implies uniqueness.
Fix and let in the periodic lift; this box is compact by Heine--Borel. Write for the common limit from step 2.1 and fix . For and rational , include in a family when for every integer with and every with , , and continuity gives . The set definitions in [F2] guarantee that these balls cover : each point has a positive real radius, and a smaller rational radius works. The family consists of all qualifying pairs, so no radius is selected point by point. By [F2], a finite subcover exists; take the least of its finitely many rational radii. The triangle inequality then gives uniformly on for all sufficiently large . This proves uniform convergence on the fundamental box through , hence on the torus and every compact subset of . Thus the extensions converge locally uniformly.
