How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Standard and gap forms of bounded client gradient dissimilarity

Definition

Let N,d≥1 be positive integers, let fi:Rd→R be differentiable, and put f=N−1∑i=1Nfi. For constants G≥0 and B≥1, the clients have standard (G,B)-bounded gradient dissimilarity if 1N∑i=1N∥∇fi(x)∥22≤G2+B2∥∇f(x)∥22(x∈Rd).

For β>0 and a finite global lower bound f⋆∈R for f, the gap-form condition with parameters (G,B,β,f⋆) is 1N∑i=1N∥∇fi(x)∥22≤G2+2βB2(f(x)−f⋆)(x∈Rd). In the convex-client FedAvg results, β is a common gradient Lipschitz constant and f⋆ is the attained minimum of f; this is the relaxed convex form of the source's assumption. These conditions bound the population second moment of deterministic client gradients. They are separate from the within-client stochastic-gradient noise bound E∥gi(x)−∇fi(x)∥22≤σ2.
