How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Tangent orientation double cover of a surface with boundary

Definition

Let M be a smooth two-dimensional manifold with boundary and let det⁡TxM=Λ2TxM be the determinant line of its tangent space. An orientation of TxM is a positive ray ox in this line. The tangent orientation double cover is the set

M~={(x,ox):x∈M, ox is an orientation of TxM},π(x,ox)=x.

For a boundary chart ϕ:U→V⊆H2, let oϕ(x) be the ray obtained by applying det⁡(dϕx−1) to the standard positive ray in det⁡R2. Give M~ the smooth boundary-chart structure whose two local sheets over U are {(x,oϕ(x)):x∈U} and {(x,−oϕ(x)):x∈U}, each with coordinate map (x,±oϕ(x))↦ϕ(x). On an overlap with a second chart ψ, the sheet sign changes by sgn⁡det⁡D(ψ∘ϕ−1); this sign is locally constant, so the sheet transitions are smooth half-space transitions. Thus π is the associated two-sheeted smooth covering map, including over the boundary. The involution τ(x,ox)=(x,−ox) exchanges the sheets. The canonical orientation of M~ at (x,ox) is the ray (det⁡dπ(x,ox))−1(ox) in det⁡T(x,ox)M~.

18 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
