How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Real octonions by Cayley–Dickson doubling
Definition
As a real vector space, set , with componentwise addition and real scalar multiplication, using the quaternion algebra, conjugation, and norm of The quaternions : real quadruples with componentwise addition and an explicit multiplication formula matching the table on . Define
Distinguish ; the two-sided unit property is verified in The Cayley–Dickson octonions are alternative but not associative ↗. Write
This fixes the multiplication convention.
Remarks
The following directed cycles record the convention on the seven imaginary basis units. An oriented cycle means , , and ; reversing a product changes its sign. These cycles are an aid for reading the multiplication table, not a proof of alternativity or nonassociativity.
For example, the first cycle gives ; the second gives , , and, on reversing the first product, . These identities can also be checked directly from the pair formula. The proof of the alternative laws uses that formula, not this diagram. The theorem The Cayley–Dickson octonions are alternative but not associative ↗ proves both alternative laws and displays a nonassociative triple; neither property is assumed in this definition.

Dependency tree · two levels
14 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
