How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Octonion conjugation is an anti-involution

Statement

For O of Real octonions by Cayley–Dickson doubling, octonion conjugation satisfies xˉ‾=x and xy‾=yˉxˉ. If x=(a,b) with a,b∈H, then

x+xˉ=(2a0^,0),xxˉ=xˉx=(N(a)+N(b)^,0),

so its trace and norm are real scalars.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: x=(a,b) and y=(c,d) in the pair model for O.

[F1]

O=H×H has product (a,b)(c,d)=(ac−dˉb,da+bcˉ) and conjugation (a,b)↦(aˉ,−b) (Real octonions by Cayley–Dickson doubling).

[F2]

Quaternion conjugation is an involution, reverses products, and satisfies a+aˉ=2a0^ (Quaternion conjugation is an anti-involution).

Proof

1.1givenF1F2algebra

Applying quaternion conjugation twice gives (a,b)‾‾=(aˉˉ,b)=(a,b). Also (a,b)+(a,b)‾=(a+aˉ,0)=(2a0^,0) by [F2].

2.1givenF1F2step 1.1algebra

Using [F1] and reversing quaternion products by [F2], (a,b)(c,d)‾=(ac−dˉb‾,−(da+bcˉ))=(cˉaˉ−bˉd,−da−bcˉ). The same pair-product formula gives (c,d)‾ (a,b)‾=(cˉ,−d)(aˉ,−b)=(cˉaˉ−bˉd,−bcˉ−da), which is equal because quaternion addition is commutative. Thus xy‾=yˉxˉ.

3.1givenF1F3step 1.1algebra∎

Substitution in the pair formula [F1] and the quaternion norm identities [F3] gives (a,b)(aˉ,−b)=(aaˉ+bˉb,0)=(N(a)+N(b)^,0),(aˉ,−b)(a,b)=(aˉa+bˉb,0)=(N(a)+N(b)^,0). Hence xxˉ=xˉx=(N(a)+N(b)^,0), completing all claims.

24 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
