How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Reference finite elements and unisolvent degrees of freedom
Definition
Let , let be a nonempty bounded open reference cell, let be an integer, and let . A reference finite element is a triple where is an -dimensional subspace of for and is a list of linear functionals on for which is bijective. The functionals are the degrees of freedom and the triple is unisolvent. Its shape functions are the unique dual basis satisfying .
If is a normed vector space of functions on containing , fix for each a bounded linear extension of to , and denote this chosen extension by the same symbol. The reference interpolation operator associated with these chosen extensions is The definition of a reference finite element does not assert that any particular list of functionals is unisolvent or bounded on a given Sobolev space; those are separate proof obligations. For , , , the empty list gives the unique bijection between these zero spaces, and the shape-function list is empty. The corresponding interpolation formula is the empty sum, hence the zero map into .
