How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Abelian Maurer–Cartan gauge classes are cohomology
Example
Let be a graded cochain complex over a characteristic-zero field with for , and for . These operations form a complete filtered shifted L∞-algebra. Its Maurer–Cartan set is and its completed polynomial gauge quotient is .
For a concrete comparison, let , , and all other degrees be zero. In the first structure take ; in the second take , . Both have the identical Maurer–Cartan equation on . The first canonical gauge quotient is , while the second has one class. Thus the solution equation on degree-zero elements alone omits data essential to canonical gauge classes.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The cochain complex, filtration and two specified examples.
Completed polynomial gauge paths for filtered Maurer–Cartan elements defines the gauge equation and its generated equivalence.
Existence and uniqueness of complete filtered Maurer–Cartan gauge flow gives existence, uniqueness and preservation of curvature for these filtered paths.
Verification
The only nonzero shifted identity is , which is the complex axiom. Its unary operation preserves the two-step filtration, and higher operations vanish, so all additive filtration inclusions hold. The filtration is separated and complete since the quotient by is itself. Its curvature is , so the Maurer–Cartan set is in degree zero.
Here independently of . Any path therefore satisfies , so its endpoints have the same cohomology class. A finite chain has that property as well. Conversely, if with , take and . This satisfies the path equation and has since ; it is also the unique flow in [F2]. Thus the gauge equivalence classes are precisely the stated cohomology classes.
In both concrete complexes is zero on degree zero, so the curvature equation is identically zero on . In the zero complex the image from degree minus one is zero, giving quotient . In the second complex that image is all , giving a single class. The two quotient computations follow from step 2.1 with identical degree-zero solution loci.
