How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Without a complete filtration an infinite Maurer–Cartan sum may be undefined
Statement refuted
The unfiltered direct-sum L∞ data alone always makes an element of the underlying graded space for every degree-zero .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A characteristic-zero field and the shifted L∞ convention of Shifted coalgebra definition of an L∞-algebra.
Shifted coalgebra definition of an L∞-algebra: an L∞-structure is a degree-one coderivation with square zero on the algebraic direct sum .
Square-zero coderivations are equivalent to the shifted higher Jacobi identities: it suffices to verify the shifted unshuffle Jacobi identities to verify .
Koszul sign rule for graded tensor products and permutations: the unshuffle signs are determined by the graded degrees; all nonzero inputs below have degree zero.
Field, The characteristic of a ring: the least with when one exists, and otherwise, and Every field is a commutative ring with ; it is an integral domain, and it is a commutative division ring: the field has characteristic zero, so each is nonzero and invertible.
Counterexample
Take , , and otherwise, so has and . For each define a graded-symmetric map by
and set it to zero on every symmetric basis tensor containing any . This defines an L∞-structure on the algebraic direct sum .
Each has degree , since its only nonzero input has degree zero and its output has degree one. It is graded-symmetric because has degree zero and all tensors containing an map to zero.
Every composition vanishes: a nonzero inner value is a multiple of , and every outer operation is zero when any input contains an . Thus all Jacobi sums in [F2] vanish, and the specified operations do define an L∞-algebra.
For , the th Maurer–Cartan summand is , so the proposed sum is . Elements of have finite support, whereas the partial sums have nonzero support in every index from through and never stabilize. Therefore is not an element of ; without a complete filtration or other completion, this Maurer–Cartan expression is undefined.

29 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
