How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Three-point Clenshaw–Curtis integration of a quadratic

Example

For the three-point rule (n=2) on [−1,1], the nodes are 1,0,−1 and the quadrature weights in that order are 1/3,4/3,1/3. Hence it integrates 1, x, and x2 exactly, with respective values 2, 0, and 2/3.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The degree n=2 Clenshaw–Curtis rule on [−1,1] and the sample data of the polynomials 1,x,x2 at its three nodes.

[F1]

Type-I cosine transform for Chebyshev–Lobatto data: for n=2, Xk=y0+(−1)ky2+2y1cos⁡(kπ/2).

[F2]

DCT-I coefficients of the Chebyshev–Lobatto interpolant: a0=X0/4, a1=X1/2, and a2=X2/4.

[F3]

Exact integrals of Chebyshev polynomials: μ0=2, μ1=0, and μ2=−2/3.

[F4]

Clenshaw–Curtis quadrature with the midpoint zero-degree case: Q2,[−1,1](f)=∑k=02akμk since d=1.

[F5]

Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kinds by their three-term recurrences: T0(x)=1, T1(x)=x, and T2(x)=2x2−1.

Proof

1.1givenF1F2F4algebra

For sample values (y0,y1,y2) at (1,0,−1), [F1] and the exact values cos⁡(0)=1, cos⁡(π/2)=0, cos⁡(π)=−1 give X0=y0+2y1+y2, X1=y0−y2, and X2=y0−2y1+y2. Substituting [F2] into [F4] gives Q2(f)=y0+2y1+y22−y0−2y1+y26=y03+4y13+y23.

For 1, the sample vector is (1,1,1) and the rule gives 2. For x, the vector is (1,0,−1) and the rule gives 0. For x2, it is (1,0,1) and the rule gives 2/3. Direct integration gives these same values, respectively 2, 0, and [x3/3]−11=2/3. Equivalently, [F5] gives x2=(T0+T2)/2, and [F3] gives integral μ0/2+μ2/2=2/3. Thus all three evaluations agree with the exact integrals.

29 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
