How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
A natural cubic spline undershoots a nonnegative table
Example
Consider the nonnegative table . On the three unit cells, with on cell , define These pieces form a natural cubic spline interpolating the table, but for . PCHIP on the same data has a flat middle segment at zero and remains between the nonnegative cell endpoints.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The four tabulated nodes and values, the displayed piecewise cubic , and exact real arithmetic.
Natural cubic splines: a natural cubic spline is , piecewise cubic, and has second derivative zero at its first and last knots.
PCHIP slope selection: PCHIP selects zero interior slope when adjacent secants have nonpositive product and uses the Hermite pieces from the resulting nodal slopes.
PCHIP is C1, monotone on each data segment, and has no interval overshoot: every PCHIP cell is monotone between its endpoint values; a flat cell is constant.
Sum, product, quotient, and chain rules from difference quotients: the power rule holds for every integer .
Verification
Each displayed piece has endpoint values , , , , and , so the pieces interpolate the given table. By [F4], their first derivatives are , , and ; the derivative values match at both shared knots. Their second derivatives are , , and ; these match at shared knots, and . By [F1], this is a natural cubic spline.
For , , although every tabulated value is nonnegative. Thus the natural cubic spline undershoots the data range on the middle cell.
The secants are , , and . By [F2], the interior slopes at nodes and are both zero because each neighboring pair includes a zero secant; the Hermite piece joining the two zero values with zero slopes is constant zero. By [F3], the first and last PCHIP pieces remain between and , and between and , respectively. Hence PCHIP is nonnegative throughout the interval and does not reproduce the natural spline's undershoot.

11 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
