How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
A shape-regular family and a degenerating sliver family
Statement
Let be a unit-side equilateral triangle. For each integer , its standard triangular-grid subdivision, obtained by dividing each side into equal segments and drawing the parallel grid lines, consists of equilateral cells of side ; these cells form a shape-regular family with . For , triangulate the fixed unit square into horizontal strips of height , each split along a diagonal. Its cells include translates and reflections of the triangle with vertices ; their , so this mesh family is not shape regular under the convention of Matching affine simplicial meshes and shape regularity.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The inradius-to-diameter shape-regularity convention.
A family is shape regular when the ratios of cell diameter to inradius are uniformly bounded. (Matching affine simplicial meshes and shape regularity)
Proof
Each cell in the stated triangular-grid subdivision has side . Its altitude is , so its area is and its incenter lies one third of the altitude from each side; hence . Its diameter is , so , independently of . By [F1] this family is shape regular.
For , the sliver triangle's incenter joined to its three vertices partitions it into three triangles with common altitude , so its area is times half its perimeter. Its side lengths are , its longest side is and its area is . Its perimeter is , so The numerator of tends to , while its denominator is of order ; hence the ratio tends to infinity. The second triangle in each strip is congruent, so every cell has the same ratio. Thus no uniform shape-regularity constant exists for this fixed-square mesh family.
