How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
An autonomous periodic orbit has a neutral Floquet multiplier
Statement
Let be an autonomous vector field, let be a nonconstant periodic solution of period , and let be its monodromy matrix. Then
In particular, is a Floquet multiplier.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The autonomous vector field, its local flow on a common tube through time , and the nonconstant periodic solution .
The variational derivative exists on a common compact tube (Initial-data sensitivity of an ODE flow on a common compact tube).
A autonomous field has a unique maximal flow with (C¹ Euclidean maximal flows, variational dependence and the finite C² upgrade). Uniqueness gives wherever both sides are defined: as functions of the elapsed time, both sides solve the same IVP from .
Derivatives of compositions obey the chain rule (The chain rule for total derivatives: ).
A monodromy matrix is the period-time variational fundamental matrix, and its eigenvalues are the Floquet multipliers (Local periodic-orbit, Poincare-return, and Floquet data).
Proof
Nonconstancy implies : otherwise the constant curve through is an IVP solution, and uniqueness in [F2] forces to be that constant curve.
Differentiate the flow identity in [F2] with respect to at . The chain rule [F3] gives on the left, while the time derivative on the right is . By [F1] the left derivative is the monodromy action, hence . Since by step 1.1, this is an eigenvector with eigenvalue , which is a Floquet multiplier by [F4].
