How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Compact wavelet projections approximate smooth functions and commute asymptotically with multiplication
Statement
Let be the span of wavelets through level in a compactly supported orthonormal multiresolution basis on , either boundary corrected or periodized. Assume constants belong to , its dimension , and its orthonormal scaling functions have supremum norm at most , support diameter at most , and uniformly bounded overlap. Periodized supports and distances are interpreted on the circle. Assume also and . Let denote the orthogonal projection onto .
Then has a kernel satisfying and when . If is -Hölder for , then For the composition assertion, assume additionally an integer such that for , bounded overlap also for their derivatives, and vanishing moments through degree for the detail wavelets, including boundary wavelets; the finite low scaling functions are . These are the usual sufficiently regular compact wavelet hypotheses. If a bounded function has coefficients bounded by , with , and its wavelet expansion represents in , then , up to equality of the continuous representatives. Under these additional derivative and cancellation hypotheses, also has coefficients bounded by , including integer , and are -Hölder for every . Moreover for .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The explicitly stated compact multiresolution, scaling-function, wavelet, and Hölder assumptions.
Logarithmic negative Sobolev spaces for white noise supplies the orthonormal coefficient convention; all additional localization hypotheses are stated above.
Proof
The finite orthogonal projection has kernel . At each only a uniformly bounded number of terms are nonzero, and each has . Thus . A nonzero term requires to lie in one scaling support, giving the support bound. Also ; Cauchy–Schwarz on the scaling coefficients gives the claimed to bound.
The levelwise tail satisfies . Summing its geometric series over proves uniform convergence and the claimed approximation rate. Its uniform limit agrees with its limit, hence with almost everywhere, and everywhere for continuous representatives.
For , . Therefore . Hölder continuity, the support bound, and the kernel integral bound give the asserted commutator estimate.
For composition put and , with the first finite low block treated as . Levelwise derivative bounds and overlap give for , and for by summing levels; also . The identity and repeated product and chain rules therefore give, writing , and . Indeed a derivative of order of the exponential factor is a finite sum of products of derivatives of its exponent of total order , bounded by ; pairing with the derivative of order of gives .
The telescoping series converges uniformly. For a wavelet at level , the terms with have coefficients bounded by . For , subtract the degree Taylor polynomial of about a point of the wavelet support; all its integrals vanish by the stated moments. The Taylor remainder gives . Sum the geometric series over to get the same bound. The fixed smooth has the stronger order . This proves composition in the coefficient class directly, for every positive including integers, without presuming a Hölder–wavelet equivalence.
For the levelwise derivative and supremum bounds for are respectively at most and . Given distance , choose with . The difference of the levels through is at most by the derivative bound; the remaining difference is at most . Thus is -Hölder. The exponential has bounded derivative on the bounded range of , so has the same Hölder bound.

An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
