How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Coordinate minimization, positive-definiteness invariant and termination of the finite-budget graphical-lasso procedure
Statement
Let be an integer, be real symmetric positive semidefinite, , and be positive integers. Execute the finite-budget block and cyclic-coordinate graphical-lasso procedure with these inputs in exact real arithmetic, treating its finite-dimensional matrix operations as exact operations. The initialized matrix and every accepted matrix are symmetric positive definite. In every block reached before failure, its principal matrix is positive definite, every , and every coordinate update is well-defined and uniquely minimizes
with all other coordinates fixed. Each candidate matrix is finite and symmetric; it is accepted exactly when positive definite. The procedure terminates after at most coordinate updates and candidate eigenvalue tests, returning either failure or a symmetric positive-definite matrix . These assertions do not assert convergence of the iterates or global optimality for the sparse-precision objective.

Given: The inputs and execution specified in the Statement.
The procedure initializes , uses the same temporary permutation for and , resets for each block, makes finite cyclic sweeps with the specified soft-threshold update, restores the original indexing, accepts a candidate only if all its eigenvalues are positive, and returns after outer sweeps unless an explicit guard returns failure. Finite-budget block and cyclic-coordinate graphical-lasso procedure.
Every real symmetric matrix has an orthonormal eigenbasis, by applying the real spectral theorem to its self-adjoint endomorphism on Euclidean space. Real spectral theorem: a self-adjoint endomorphism of a finite-dimensional real inner product space has an orthonormal eigenbasis.
Proof
Initially is symmetric, and for every nonzero , . Thus initialization is positive definite. If the current is positive definite, reindexing both its rows and columns only reindexes this quadratic form. For a nonzero , extending by a last zero in the temporary ordering gives . Hence is positive definite and at each coordinate.
Hold all coordinates except fixed, and write and . Expanding the symmetric quadratic gives , where and is independent of . Put if , if , and if . In these three cases respectively put , , and . Then , , and , so . Consequently , and the lower bound is strictly positive whenever . Thus is the unique coordinate minimizer. All quantities are real and division is by a positive number, so finitely many such updates produce a finite real vector ; the nonpositive-diagonal guard cannot fire while the current is positive definite.
For such a block, and are finite and the block candidate is symmetric. Restoring original indexing preserves symmetry. By [F2] any symmetric candidate has a representation with orthogonal and real diagonal. The identity shows that is positive definite if all ; conversely applying positive definiteness to shows that every . Thus the candidate guard accepts exactly the positive-definite candidates. Initialization, the within-block reasoning and this acceptance rule give induction over all reached blocks: every accepted is symmetric positive definite, and each later block again has the properties proved above until a candidate guard returns failure.
There are at most blocks, each with coordinate updates and one finite-dimensional eigenvalue test; early failure only decreases these counts. Every reached operation is well-defined by the preceding steps and the stipulated exact matrix operations, so execution terminates with failure or completes all blocks. In the latter case the final has positive diagonal eigenvalues by step 3.1. Hence exists, is symmetric and has for every nonzero . This proves every asserted property without a convergence or global-optimizer inference.
