How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Matrix units lift through a finite free split formal deformation
Statement
Let be a field, , and a unital -algebra free of finite rank as an -module. Suppose that
for a finite set and positive integers . Then there is an -algebra isomorphism
whose reduction modulo is the given block decomposition. In particular, the diagonal matrix idempotents and all matrix units can be lifted exactly; centrality of the lifted block sums follows from the resulting matrix-unit basis and is not assumed during idempotent lifting.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A field , , a finite free unital -algebra , and a specified isomorphism .
A finite complete orthogonal family of idempotents in lifts to a complete orthogonal family in (Orthogonal idempotents lift over a complete formal power-series ring).
The image of an idempotent endomorphism of is free of rank equal to the dimension of its reduction modulo (Finite direct summands over a formal-series ring are free with rank read from reduction).
The ring is complete and separated for the -adic topology, , and is a field (The one-parameter formal-series ring is complete, separated, and has residue field ).
A finite free module has a basis with unique finite coordinates (The free module on a set and its standard basis).
A formal power series is a unit exactly when its constant coefficient is a unit (A formal power series is a unit exactly when its constant coefficient is a unit).
Proof
If is empty, then ; since a finite free module of rank reduces to and by [F3, F4], this forces and hence , so the empty product conclusion holds. Otherwise, for each standard diagonal matrix idempotent in the given reduction choose the finite complete orthogonal family of all such idempotents. By [F1] it lifts to pairwise orthogonal idempotents whose sum is .
For any two lifted diagonal idempotents , the map , , is an idempotent -linear projection with image . The decomposition reduces modulo to the corresponding image/kernel decomposition of ; hence . In the specified product of matrix algebras this corner has dimension when belong to the same block and dimension when they belong to different blocks. Applying [F2] after identifying the finite free module with shows that same-block corners are free of rank and cross-block corners are zero.
Fix one block and its first diagonal idempotent . For each choose lifts and of the standard matrix units and . Each corner is free of rank by step 2.1; an element whose reduction is nonzero is a basis, because its coefficient relative to any basis has nonzero constant term and is therefore a unit by [F5]. Thus with ; replacing by gives . Also with . This product is idempotent because , so ; since is a unit by [F5], . Hence .
Define . If then , and if then this product is zero by orthogonality of . Therefore . Products between distinct blocks vanish by the zero cross-block corners of step 2.1, and . Their reductions are exactly all standard matrix units.
The total number of elements is by [F3, F4]. Relative to an -basis of , their coordinate matrix reduces to an invertible matrix over , so for some matrix . The factorization is invertible: the partial sums of converge entrywise by completeness in [F3], and the finite geometric identity plus separatedness in [F3] makes the limit the two-sided inverse of the second factor. Thus the lifted matrix units form an -basis by [F4]. The linear map from the product of matrix algebras sending standard matrix units to is multiplicative by step 4.1, is unital, and maps a basis to a basis; it is the claimed algebra isomorphism.
