How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Stabilizer average is the fixed-space projector

Statement

For a stabilizer subgroup S on n qubits, the finite operator average

ΠS:=1∣S∣∑g∈Sg

is self-adjoint and idempotent, and its image is exactly the common +1 fixed space C(S). If this image is the span of a unit vector ψ, then ΠS=∣ψ⟩⟨ψ∣ under the root-linear-first Dirac convention.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: A finite abelian stabilizer subgroup S of Hermitian Pauli operators.

[F1]

Stabilizer subgroup: each g∈S is Hermitian and the group is closed under multiplication and inverses.

[F2]

Stabilizer labels form an isotropic space of the same rank: S is finite, ∣S∣=2rank⁡(S), and its identity occurs once in the sum.

[F3]

Rectangular matrix multiplication and the identity matrix In, including zero-sized shapes: multiplication is associative and the identity acts on both sides.

[A1]

Dirac Notation Conversion: in the root-linear-first convention, ∣x⟩⟨y∣ acts by z↦⟨z,y⟩rootx.

Proof

Given: The data in the Statement.

1.1F1F2F3given

Since every g is Hermitian, ΠS†=ΠS. In the product ΠS2=∣S∣−2∑g,h∈Sgh, each k∈S occurs exactly ∣S∣ times: for each g there is exactly one h=g−1k∈S. Therefore ΠS2=∣S∣−1∑k∈Sk=ΠS.

2.1F1F2step 1.1

For any s∈S, left multiplication g↦sg permutes S, so sΠS=ΠS. Hence every vector in im⁡ΠS is fixed by every s∈S. Conversely if sv=v for all s∈S, then ΠSv=∣S∣−1∑s∈Ssv=v. Thus im⁡ΠS=C(S).

If C(S)=Cψ with ∥ψ∥=1, then ΠS is a self-adjoint idempotent onto that line. Its kernel is orthogonal to its image: for u=ΠSw and ΠSv=0, ⟨u,v⟩=⟨w,ΠSv⟩=0. Therefore it is the orthogonal projection onto Cψ. By [A1] that projection is ∣ψ⟩⟨ψ∣.

25 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
