How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Selfadjoint weight Gram valuations detect Jantzen classes
Statement
Let be a discrete valuation ring with uniformizer and residue field , and let be a finite free -module with an -valued bilinear form whose scalar extension to is nondegenerate, as in DVR cellular Jantzen filtration and exact Gram valuation (the "(DVR leaf)"). Suppose is a finite decomposition into pairwise orthogonal idempotents of an -algebra acting on , with for an anti-involution satisfying . Write and let be the restricted Gram matrix. Then each is finite free, each restricted generic form is nondegenerate, and For a split finite-dimensional highest-weight algebra whose standard classes form a -basis of and whose matrix has a square unitriangular submatrix containing every standard row and a selected set of partition-weight columns of the same cardinality (Grothendieck group of an essentially small abelian category), the weight-character map is injective. Consequently a class equality involving Jantzen pieces is equivalent to the corresponding equalities of weight Gram valuations.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The DVR with uniformizer and residue field , the finite free -module with nondegenerate generic form , the orthogonal idempotent decomposition with , and the summands .
(DVR leaf) For the free module with form one has for any Gram matrix , the reduced filtration terminates, and the subspace is the radical of the reduced form (DVR cellular Jantzen filtration and exact Gram valuation).
Modules carry the unital actions of Unital left and right modules over a ring; unqualified module means left module. Submodule freeness and exactness of are proved locally below.
By hypothesis the standard classes form a -basis and the indicated finite weight submatrix contains every standard row and is unitriangular. The Grothendieck-group relation is additivity on short exact sequences (Grothendieck group of an essentially small abelian category); triangular invertibility is proved in step 1.4.
Proof
Given: The data of the Statement and [F1]–[F3].
The decomposition is direct and its summands are free. The map , , is an -linear isomorphism with inverse (the are orthogonal idempotents summing to ), so . To prove freeness, induct on for an arbitrary submodule . The assertion is immediate for . The first-coordinate image is an ideal ; if nonzero, the minimum valuation among its nonzero elements is attained by some , and every element of is divisible by , so . Lift to . Subtracting multiples of gives , with the kernel a submodule of ; if , all of lies in . The induction proves finite freeness and rank at most . Apply it to each .
The summands are pairwise orthogonal and the restricted forms are nondegenerate. For and , by and orthogonality, so and are orthogonal for . If is orthogonal to , then it is orthogonal to every (orthogonality) and hence to , so by generic nondegeneracy of ; the identical orthogonality argument after scalar extension handles every generic vector, and thus the restriction of to is nondegenerate over .
Exactness and the character map. The functor on -modules is exact: a morphism commutes with , so its kernel on is times its kernel on ; if lies in the image of a quotient map, any preimage may be replaced by with the same image. Hence is an additive map on the Grothendieck group by [F3].
Injectivity of the weight character. Write a class in as with . Its coordinates on the partition weights are the row vector multiplied by the matrix , . Restricting only the columns to the selected partition weights retains every coefficient ; the resulting square unitriangular matrix is invertible over by finite triangular elimination (all diagonal entries are ); if , then the coordinates on that submatrix vanish and the triangular system forces for every . Hence is injective.
The Jantzen filtration decomposes. For each the orthogonality of the summands gives with , because the components of in the other summands pair trivially; consequently . For a zero-rank summand , each , its empty Gram determinant is as specified by the DVR leaf, and both sides of the identity are . Applying the DVR leaf [F1] to the free module with its restricted form and Gram matrix gives the displayed equality .
Conclusion. By step 2.1, the multiplicities appearing in a Jantzen class equality are exactly the weight Gram valuations ; by step 1.4 the weight character detects class equalities, so a class equality involving Jantzen pieces holds if and only if the corresponding equalities of weight Gram valuations hold. No Schur functor, residue-sequence character, rationalization or semisimple Hecke Grothendieck group is used anywhere.
Remarks
The lemma is the bridge that turns the exact DVR sum formula into a statement about characters: orthogonal selfadjoint idempotents split both the module and its Jantzen filtration, and a unitriangular standard-multiplicity matrix makes the weight character faithful. The argument is finite and choice-free.
