How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Smooth and locally flat topological concordance are equivalence relations
Statement
On oriented ambient-isotopy classes of smooth knots in the standard three-sphere, smooth concordance is an equivalence relation, and locally flat topological concordance is an equivalence relation.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: Smooth oriented knots and either category of concordance.
A smooth concordance is a proper smooth annulus with product collars and oriented boundary . (Smooth knot concordance)
A locally flat topological concordance is a proper locally flat annulus with product collars and the same oriented boundary convention. (Locally flat topological knot concordance)
Ambient isotopy of oriented knots is given by a smooth family of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of . (Oriented links in the three-sphere and ambient isotopy)
Product collars and the local plane-pair charts are the boundary and interior conventions for proper surfaces. (Locally flat proper surfaces and concordance collars)
Proof
Given: Oriented knot types and one of the two concordance categories.
Reflexivity is witnessed by the product annulus , oriented so its boundary is . If a representative is changed by an ambient isotopy , reparameterize time so is constant near and . Its trace then has product endpoint collars and is a concordance annulus; it is smooth in the smooth case and locally flat in the topological case because it is itself smooth. For an existing concordance, glue the trace to the matching product collar: use the reversed trace at the lower end and the forward trace at the upper end. The glued surface is an annulus in the same category, so replacing either endpoint by an ambient-isotopic representative preserves concordance. Thus the relation is well-defined on ambient-isotopy classes.
If an annulus gives a concordance from to , apply to its image. Reorient the resulting annulus so the boundary at the new lower end is and the boundary at the new upper end is . The map and reorientation preserve smoothness in the smooth category and local flatness and product collars in the topological category. This gives symmetry.
Let be a concordance from to and one from to in the same category. Glue the upper product collar of to the lower product collar of along their common oriented knot . The two collar coordinates combine to a single collar across the gluing hypersurface, so the annuli join without a corner in the smooth category and their local-flat pair charts join in the topological category. Gluing two annuli along one boundary circle gives an annulus; the intermediate boundary orientations and cancel, leaving boundary . This gives transitivity.
Steps 1.1–1.3 prove reflexivity, symmetry, transitivity, and representative independence for both relations.

9 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
