How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Locally flat proper surfaces and concordance collars

Definition

Let X be a four-dimensional manifold with boundary and let W be a compact surface with boundary. An embedding e:(W,∂W)→(X,∂X) is proper when e−1(∂X)=∂W. It is locally flat at an interior point of W when there are neighborhoods of the point and its image and a homeomorphism of pairs from those neighborhoods to (R4,R2), with the standard linear plane R2⊂R4. It is locally flat at a boundary point when there are such neighborhoods and a homeomorphism of pairs to (R+4,R+2), where R+4={x4≥0} and R+2={x2=x3=0, x4≥0}; the line ∂R+2 lies in ∂R+4. A collar of a boundary circle of W is an embedding of that circle times [0,ε) into W that is the identity on the circle at parameter 0; a concordance collar is required to agree with the corresponding product collar of the ambient end. A smooth proper surface has the analogous smooth charts and collars, which are also topological locally flat charts.

6 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
