How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The trefoil group is nonabelian with abelianization Z
Statement
Let be the trefoil represented by the standard oriented three-crossing diagram below. Choose a basepoint in the diagram's upper collar and use the common upper-collar paths from to base the positive-meridian generators. Its under-arcs are labelled so that the ordered triples of over-arc, upper target under-arc and lower source under-arc are , , and at the three crossings; read each triple in the orientation-preserving local chart that straightens the over-arc to point rightward. The knot group , where is based loops modulo endpoint-fixed homotopy with multiplication by concatenation, has presentation . This presentation denotes the free group on modulo the normal closure of the displayed relation. Its abelianization, the quotient by its commutator subgroup, is isomorphic to , but is nonabelian.
The drawing shows two oriented strands crossing three times; the two bottom endpoints join to the corresponding top endpoints by the outside arcs. The white gaps mark underpasses, and each redrawn strand is over. The crossing triples in the statement fix the generator labels and local chart convention.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: The standard oriented trefoil diagram, crossing labels, chosen complement basepoint, and common upper-collar paths specified in the Statement.
For a valid finite knot diagram with chosen complement basepoint , the Wirtinger presentation with one positive-meridian generator for each under-arc and one crossing conjugacy relator for each crossing presents using the common upper-collar paths. Correctness of the Wirtinger presentation
With a rightward over-strand and the common upper-collar basing paths, the upper target meridian and lower source meridian satisfy . Local meridian conjugacy at a Wirtinger crossing
A group presentation denotes the free group on modulo the normal closure of .
Proof
Applying [F2] to the three crossing triples gives , , and . Substitute the third equation into the first to obtain ; right multiplication by gives . Under this relation, , so the second crossing equation follows. Therefore eliminating from the presentation in [F1] yields exactly .
In the abelianization, the relation becomes , hence . The abelianization is the free abelian group on modulo this single relation, so it is .
Map and in . Both and map to , so the relation is satisfied. These two transpositions generate , making the homomorphism surjective. Since is nonabelian, its surjective preimage is nonabelian.

17 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
