How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The hypersingular operator is elliptic modulo constants
Statement
Assume the Axiom of Choice and Countable Choice. Let be the hypersingular operator of Calderon boundary operators and trace conventions. It is symmetric and nonnegative, its kernel is exactly the constants, and there is such that The real scalar is the integral, not a pairing of two elements of . The continuous embeddings use the fixed Hilbert chart convention; the second map sends to the functional . Thus can equivalently be evaluated by pairing this realized negative-order functional with . The stabilized form is bounded and coercive on . Consequently, for each there is a unique such that for every .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The Axiom of Choice, Countable Choice, the bounded connected Lipschitz domain with connected boundary and connected exterior, and the weak layer and trace conventions.
The double-layer minimizer is unique, stationary on matching-trace pairs, has jump , and has a common weak conormal with finite energy (The double-layer potential has the stated jumps and bounds).
is bounded into and the average trace and signed jumps are well defined (Calderon boundary operators and trace conventions, Bounded Calderon maps and signed jump identities).
Interior Poincare–Wirtinger and the trace estimate control by (Poincare-Wirtinger on bounded connected extension domains by Rellich compactness, The H1 trace and lifting theorem on a compact Lipschitz boundary).
An exterior finite-energy trace is controlled by the exterior gradient (Exterior finite-energy functions have a trace controlled by their gradient).
A bounded coercive real bilinear form on a real Hilbert space has a unique variational solution under Countable Choice (The Lax--Milgram theorem, The Axiom of Countable Choice ()).
Proof
If and , their sum belongs to and satisfies the stationarity equation because each summand does; uniqueness of the minimizer gives , and scalar homogeneity follows in the same way. The interior weak Green formula and the exterior finite-energy Green identity justified in the weak layer definition give Since has common conormal and , the right side is . The left side is symmetric in , so is symmetric. Setting gives .
Let and set . By [F3], . By [F4], . The jump condition gives , so Together with step 1.1 this proves the quotient ellipticity inequality. If is constant, the pair belongs to and has zero energy, so it is the unique minimizer and step 1.1 gives . Conversely, if , the ellipticity inequality makes a limit in of constants; the constant subspace is closed because it is finite dimensional, so is constant.
Put and . The quotient norm controls : for any constant , the bound gives , hence , and take the infimum. Also . Thus . By [F2], is bounded; the rank-one term is bounded because , so is bounded. Its coercivity follows from step 2.1 and the last decomposition.
The space is a real Hilbert space under the square-sum chart norm fixed in Lipschitz polyhedral boundary, orientation, and trace spaces. Apply [F5] to the bounded coercive form and the bounded functional ; it yields a unique solution for every .
