How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Vust's graded double centralizer for the type-A nilpotent centralizer

Statement

Assume the Axiom of Choice. Let V be a finite-dimensional complex vector space, let e∈End⁡C(V) be nilpotent with largest Jordan string length l≥1, let d≥0, and put E=V⊗d. Let B=C[x1,…,xd]/(x1l,…,xdl)⋊C[Sd] act on E by the individual operators xi=e (in the i-th tensor factor) and the place permutations, and let φ ⁣:U(ge)→End⁡(E) be the algebra map induced by the diagonal action of ge={X:[X,e]=0} and ψ ⁣:B→End⁡(E)op the map encoding the right action. Then φ(U(ge))=End⁡B(E),End⁡ge(E)op=ψ(B), for every nilpotent Jordan type and every d. If e has at least d Jordan strings of the maximum length l, then ψ is injective. For d=0 the identities are scalar identities and injectivity is automatic.

The full converse uses the proved normality and covariant-extension suppliers of this page; it is not a stable-only claim and it does not assume the double commutant identity.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: AC; a nilpotent e with largest Jordan length l≥1, the algebra B=C[x1,…,xd]/(x1l,…,xdl)⋊C[Sd] acting on E=V⊗d by individual e-operators and places, and A=ge=End⁡C[e](V).

[F1]

A=End⁡C[e](V)={X:Xe=eX} is the full associative centralizer algebra, with multiplication given by composition. For a Jordan-string decomposition V=⨁αRα, Rα=C[t]/(tpα) with t acting as e, its (α,β) block is Hom⁡C[t](Rβ,Rα), of dimension min⁡(pα,pβ): a homomorphism is determined by the image of 1, which must be killed by tpβ. Thus all off-diagonal string-homomorphism blocks, including those between unequal lengths, are retained. The algebra need not be semisimple: for a single string of length 2 it is C[t]/(t2), with nonzero radical (t). The invertible elements Ge=A× act diagonally on E by a⊗d (Nilpotent endomorphisms and their nilpotency index, Every finite-dimensional nilpotent endomorphism has a basis of Jordan strings, Classical complex matrix Lie algebras).

[F2]

Tensor matrix units identify End⁡(E) with End⁡(V)⊗d. Extending a basis of A=ker⁡[X↦[X,e]] in each factor shows that commuting with every individual e is exactly membership in A⊗d. The place-fixed tensors are spanned by symmetrized pure tensors. For a1,…,ad∈A, the identity ∑S⊆{1,…,d}(−1)d−∣S∣(∑j∈Saj)⊗d=∑σ∈Sdaσ(1)⊗⋯⊗aσ(d) follows by expansion: any term missing a label cancels in the subset sum, and surviving terms use each label once. Thus (A⊗d)Sd is spanned by a⊗d. For d=0 both spaces are C.

[F3]

Normality and covariants: the orbit closure of e is normal with codim⁡∂X≥2, and every Ge-fixed endomorphism of V⊗d is the value at e of a GL(V)-equivariant polynomial map Φ(X)=∑hch(X)σh(Xh1⊗⋯⊗Xhd) with scalar invariant coefficients (Type-A nilpotent orbit closures are normal via chain varieties, Nilpotent-orbit tensor covariants extend and polarize).

[F4]

The Hecke operators xj,si of Arakawa-Suzuki Casimir operators on tensor functors satisfy the relations of Hd, and si acts as the place permutation (The Casimir and place-permutation operators satisfy the degenerate affine Hecke relations).

Given: The algebra A=ge, the truncated algebra B, and the maps φ,ψ of the Statement.

1.1F1F2algebra

The first centralizer. An operator T∈End⁡(E) commutes with the action of B if and only if it commutes with the individual e-operators and with the place permutations: the first condition says T∈A⊗d by [F2], and then the second says T∈(A⊗d)Sd, which is spanned by the elements a⊗d, a∈A. The image of U(ge) under the diagonal representation is contained in End⁡B(E): the diagonal action of A commutes with the individual e's and with places. Conversely, for a∈A the element a⊗d equals the product of its individual-position operators; For the commuting individual operators ai, put Q(t)=∏i(1+ait)=∑rqrtr and pk=∑iaik. Formal differentiation and the geometric series for each factor give Q′(t)=Q(t)∑k≥1(−1)k−1pktk−1, so q0=1 and qr=r−1∑k=1r(−1)k−1pkqr−k. Each pk=Δd(ak) belongs to the enveloping image because A is an associative algebra; here ak is the matrix power, regarded as an element of the Lie algebra A. The recurrence therefore puts qd=∏iai=a⊗d in that image. Hence a⊗d∈φ(U(ge)) and φ(U(ge))=End⁡B(E).

2.1F1F3step 1.1algebra

The second centralizer. An operator T commutes with the diagonal A-action if and only if it is Ge-fixed, as follows. If T is Ge-fixed, commuting with (1+ta)⊗d for all but finitely many t and comparing its linear coefficient gives [T,Δd(a)]=0. Conversely, if T commutes with every Δd(a), it commutes with Δd(ak) for all k. Newton identities express a⊗d in these power sums, so T commutes with a⊗d, in particular for every unit a∈Ge. By [F3] every Ge-fixed operator is Φ(e) for an equivariant polynomial covariant Φ(X)=∑hch(X)σh(Xh1⊗⋯⊗Xhd); evaluating at X=e replaces each Xhi by ehi, which is a polynomial in the individual e-operators of degree less than l, so Φ(e)∈ψ(B) (the truncated algebra B contains exactly the polynomials e0,…,el−1 in each factor and the places). Conversely every element of ψ(B) commutes with the diagonal A-action: for a∈A put Δd(a)=∑k=1da(k); each individual e(j) satisfies [Δd(a),e(j)]=[a,e](j)=0, and each place permutation Pσ satisfies PσΔd(a)Pσ−1=Δd(a). These operators generate ψ(B), so their products and linear combinations also commute with every Δd(a). Therefore End⁡ge(E)op=ψ(B).

Stable injectivity. Suppose e has at least d Jordan strings of the maximum length l, with top vectors w1,…,wd on distinct strings. The vectors w1r1⊗⋯⊗wdrd with 0≤ri<l (where wr=erw is the r-th vector of the string) are ld distinct members of the Jordan tensor basis of E; applying the d! place permutations gives ldd! distinct basis vectors, since the string label of each tensor factor is recovered from the vector and the place permutation is recovered from the ordering of the labels. These vectors span a right B-submodule isomorphic to the regular module B (the basis vectors er1w1⊗⋯⊗erdwdσ, σ∈Sd, multiply exactly as the standard basis of the truncated polynomial/permutation algebra), so the right action ψ is injective. For d=0, E=C, B=C and both identities and injectivity reduce to scalar identities.

Remarks

  • The identity φ(U(ge))=End⁡B(E) is the stable-looking half and is proved without normality; the identity End⁡ge(E)op=ψ(B) is the converse half where the covariant extension theorem is consumed, allowing arbitrary Jordan type and arbitrary d.

  • The full polynomial/permutation algebra has the same operator image, since each individual e satisfies el=0. Truncation removes this kernel; it does not alter either centralizer.
