How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The type-A nilpotent pyramid, good grading and Whittaker character
Definition
Work over . Let be a partition of with transpose , where for a nonempty row list and for an empty row list. Zero-length rows have no boxes. Let with matrix units in the standard basis (Classical complex matrix Lie algebras). Number the boxes of the diagram of by down columns from the left, and for a box write for its row and column, for the box immediately to its left (or if absent), and for the box immediately to its right (or if absent). Define the nilpotent endomorphism and declare for all , so that with . Put and for rows define the shift if and if , together with the centralizer elements Finally let be , where the trace is the trace of the matrix.
The verification below records the properties of this data that are used throughout this page. has Jordan type ; is a parabolic subalgebra with Levi factor and nilradical , while is the nilradical of the opposite parabolic; the elements with form a basis of the centralizer ; the box set is in bijection with via , and and is a Lie algebra character, . This grading is the type-A pyramid good grading in the degree-one convention: is injective for and surjective for . For it differs from the standard Dynkin grading, in which has degree rather than . For all boxes lie in one column or there are no boxes, and the pyramid grading and the trivial Dynkin grading both concentrate in degree zero. If , take : the box set and both centralizer index sets are empty, , , and . These conventions also permit an empty row list.

Matrix units satisfy and for , and the trace is (Classical complex matrix Lie algebras).
Jordan strings: a nilpotent endomorphism is described by its strings ; the Jordan type is the partition of the string lengths, and the centralizer of a nilpotent of type has dimension . Indeed its string-pair block is ; the image of is any vector killed by , a subspace of dimension (Every finite-dimensional nilpotent endomorphism has a basis of Jordan strings, Nilpotent endomorphisms and their nilpotency index).
The trace form on is symmetric and invariant, and the degree grading is multiplicative: if and then , and for with (Trace forms are symmetric and invariant, Classical complex matrix Lie algebras).
The enveloping algebra and representations of (Universal enveloping algebra, Representations of Lie algebras).
Proof
Given: The pyramid data of the Definition.
The endomorphism acts on the box basis by and for boxes with ; hence the in one row form a Jordan string of length , because left shifts run from the rightmost box of the row to the first. Consequently is nilpotent of Jordan type , , and the number of columns is when the row list is nonempty, with for the empty row list. Zero-length rows contribute no Jordan strings; for all box-indexed sums and vector spaces are empty or zero.
Parabolic structure. The degree defines a -grading of the associative algebra: when by [F1], and . Hence is a subalgebra, its degree-zero part consists of the matrices with , which is exactly the block-diagonal subalgebra with blocks of sizes , so ; the strictly positive part is a nilpotent ideal and is the nilradical of the opposite parabolic, with .
The centralizer basis. First for boxes , with a term omitted when the relevant neighbour is absent (this is and , while and holds exactly for in the same row). Now write with the box of row in column and the box of row in column , the sum over with and ; here by the defining range, so this index set is exactly . Then where a term is omitted when the neighbour does not exist; shifting the second sum by and using (which exists exactly when ) shows that the two sums run over the same index set , because for every in the defining range one has ; hence the commutator is . The are linearly independent because they are sums over pairwise disjoint matrix units, and their number is , which equals by [F2]. Hence they form a basis of .
The bijection . For put , and . Because is rightmost, ; hence , because , and because . Thus , so the map lands in . The triple determines as the rightmost box of row and as the box of row in column , proving injectivity. Conversely, if , then gives , while gives . Thus those two boxes exist, their columns satisfy , and they give the required preimage. If either row has length zero, the index range in is empty, consistently with the absence of such a box pair.
The character. For one has by step 1.2, and , so and by [F3]. Hence , that is, is a Lie algebra character on : for , .
The good-grading conditions. By step 1.3, the centralizer has a homogeneous basis with , so it has no negative-degree part. The kernel of is , hence this map is injective for . The trace pairing is nondegenerate between and : each matrix unit pairs with , and matrix units of other total degree have zero trace. Invariance gives , so the transpose of the map on degree is, up to sign, . For the latter is injective by the negative-degree result; finite-dimensional duality therefore makes the original map surjective. These are the good-grading conditions for degree-one . They remain valid when , because all nonzero spaces then have degree zero.
The identity . Left shifts of run through the boxes of row in columns , and the corresponding left shifts of run through the boxes of row in columns ; all these exist because and the shifts stop while the row box exists. The pairs obtained are exactly the pairs with column difference and ranging over ; by step 2.1 these are exactly the pairs indexing . Hence the two finite sums coincide, and the two displayed families are the same basis of .
Dynkin normalization and the zero boundary. If , step 1.1 puts this nonzero element in pyramid degree , whereas the standard Dynkin grading defined by an -triple has and puts it in degree ; these two gradings therefore differ. There is no assertion that every Dynkin matrix degree is even: on Jordan strings of lengths one and two the standard -weights are and , so matrix units between these strings have odd weights. If , no row has length greater than one, since a row of length at least two contributes a distinct nonzero left-shift matrix unit. Hence all boxes lie in the first column or there are none, every matrix unit has pyramid degree zero, and the zero triple gives the trivial Dynkin grading as well. If , there are no matrix units or centralizer indices; the parabolic, Levi, opposite nilradical and trace character are zero. Thus the conventions and good-grading conditions cover repeated row lengths, zero-length rows and the empty pyramid without an exclusion.
Remarks
-
The numbering of boxes down columns from the left makes each row a Jordan string of ; this is why the row lengths (weakly increasing) are the Jordan block sizes, while the column heights are the ranks' increments and index the Levi blocks of .
-
The shift counts the overlap of the two rows through the identity ; this count is used again in the loop-mode index sets of the finite W-algebra items.
