How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
A charged RN background does not amplify a neutral test scalar
Statement refuted
Every admitted scattering mode on a nonzero charged subextremal electric Reissner--Nordström background is amplified, regardless of the test scalar's charge.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: The charged radial scattering model on a fixed subextremal electric RN exterior. We construct an admitted solution for the neutral spherical mode; no scattering-solution existence is assumed.
Charged radial equation on subextremal electric RN: for a smooth separated solution, , with derivatives in .
Exact charged scattering Wronskian flux identity: every admitted scattering solution satisfies .
Massless charged-scalar radial scattering data: is a smooth coordinate from the exterior onto with ; the separated field is . For , and , and admissibility requires
Choose any , , and , and set and .
For the angular mode choose on the unit round sphere. It is smooth, satisfies . Since ,
Counterexample
Write and use the choices in [A1]--[A2]. By [F3], ranges over all of and . The charged radial equation [F1] becomes The definition gives and . Since and , we have and for , so and . Thus is smooth and real. Moreover,
Define by the Volterra equation Iteration gives a uniformly convergent Neumann series: the absolute value of its th iterated term is at most , using for real and the ordered integration region. The sum is bounded on ; differentiating the integral equation shows it is a smooth solution of the equation in step 1.1. The tail integrals tend to zero as , and differentiation under the integral gives
Since , expanding the sine in step 2.1 into exponentials and replacing the upper integration limit by gives as , where The same tail estimate after differentiating the integral equation proves the displayed derivative asymptotic.
For , the real-coefficient equation in step 1.1 gives . The horizon asymptotics in step 2.1 yield , while step 3.1 yields at infinity; the two oscillatory cross terms have real sum and contribute no imaginary part. Hence , so . Put , , and . Then has the asymptotics in [F3], with unit incoming amplitude and only the ingoing branch at the horizon. The separated-wave substitution in the proof of [F1] is reversible here: is a nonzero constant, and are nonzero, and each displayed step is an equality. Therefore solves and is an admitted scattering solution for any fixed nonzero allowed .
Apply [F2] to this constructed solution. Since and , Thus this nonzero-charge background admits a neutral mode whose reflected radial flux is less than the incident flux, contradicting the universal amplification statement.
Remarks
The construction proves existence for the neutral mode under the stated subextremal real-frequency assumptions. It does not assert existence for every charged mode or for other boundary-value problems.
