How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

A centered exact band can be empty

Statement

There are two-level additive data and a canonical mean for which every zero-width band centered at that mean is empty. Consequently a normalized uniform band density is not defined for that choice.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The finite additive ensemble convention in Additive spectral Hamiltonian and normalized ensembles.

[F1]

Additive spectral Hamiltonian and normalized ensembles: the second canonical probability is p2=e−βe2/(e−βe1+e−βe2) and the N-site energy label with m occurrences of level e2 has energy me2+(N−m)e1.

Proof

1.1givenF1algebra

Take q=2, e1=0, e2=ϵ>0, and choose finite β>0 with βϵ=log⁡2. By [F1], p2=e−βϵ1+e−βϵ=11+2=2−1. This number is irrational: if 2 were rational, writing it as a reduced fraction a/b gives a2=2b2, so a is even, then b is even, contradicting reduction. Hence p2 is irrational.

2.1F1step 1.1algebra∎

For any integer N≥1, an N-site label has energy mϵ for some integer m, whereas the canonical mean is NE=Nϵp2. The zero-width band condition forces mϵ=Nϵp2, hence m=Np2. Since p2 is irrational, Np2 is not an integer. Thus no label satisfies the condition, ΓN=∅, and ΠN/∣ΓN∣ is undefined. This shows why a nonemptiness or positive width hypothesis cannot be omitted.
