How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Excitation and free-current forms
Classical electromagnetism in the fixed oriented SI laboratory chart: the electromagnetic field-strength 2-form, macroscopic excitation 2-form, and free-current 3-form constructed from the existing field and material quantities. No material constitutive closure or empirical claim is included in these definitions.
Definition
Let the laboratory region be , with nonempty open and nonempty open , in the fixed positively oriented chart . Write and . Use the framework fields and the free sources , with their SI types, units, and regularity as defined by the existing laboratory, electromagnetic-field, and polarization/magnetization definitions. Whenever a first exterior derivative is used, the field coefficients are at least .
Define the spatial forms
and
Define the spacetime field-strength, excitation, and free-current forms by
Thus in coordinates, consistently with the framework electromagnetic tensor. The integral of over an oriented spacetime 2-surface has units Wb; the integral of over such a surface and of over an oriented spacetime 3-chain has units C. No relation between and the Lorentzian Hodge dual of is part of this definition; the vacuum closure is proved only in the separate vacuum branch.
For a -form , for , in this fixed chart, with Greek indices in and repeated indices summed, define its laboratory-coordinate exterior derivative by
When the coefficients are smooth this is the usual exterior derivative. For a continuous spatial 2-form and a finite real smooth singular 2-cycle in , define its cycle flux at time by , using the standard affine orientation and continuous-chain integral convention of Continuous differential-form integrals over smooth singular chains in Euclidean domains.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: The fixed lab chart, fields, material fields, free sources, and regularity conditions in the Definition.
Laboratory geometry: a restricted inertial chart, its spatial slices and fixed-time fields fixes , , and the positively oriented Euclidean spatial basis.
The electromagnetic two-form, its observer decomposition and the four-current fixes and in this chart.
Polarization, magnetization, bound and free sources, and the fields D and H defines , , , and , with the displayed SI units.
Framework-local SI units, the vacuum constants and the exact/measured status of their values gives , , and the SI units of .
Lorentzian Hodge star and periods fixes the coframe , orientation, signature , and the Lorentzian Hodge-star basis formula; this is a separate metric-dependent map from the definitions of and .
The local coordinate formula for the exterior derivative gives the usual coefficient formula for on smooth forms; the formula in the Definition is its coordinate extension to the regularity class used here.
Standard orientation of the affine simplex fixes the positive affine orientation and signed faces for each simplex. Smooth singular simplex defines the smooth simplex maps, and Smooth singular chain and cochain complexes defines finite real smooth singular chains and their signed boundary.
Continuous differential-form integrals over smooth singular chains in Euclidean domains defines the affine pullback Riemann integral for continuous forms on finite smooth chains. Integral of a form over a smooth singular simplex gives the same integral for smooth coefficients. The Riemann integral of a bounded function over a bounded Jordan measurable set defines the scalar integral, and A continuous real function on a compact Jordan measurable set is Riemann integrable over that set makes each continuous pullback coefficient on integrable.
Continuously differentiable maps, local inverses, and local diffeomorphisms defines coefficient functions as totally differentiable with continuous first derivative.
Proof
Given: The fields and chart of the Definition, with coefficients wherever differentiated.
Each displayed spatial form is an alternating covector field because the coordinate 1-forms are a basis and wedge products are alternating. Since , the time-space part of has , and its spatial part has ; hence it matches the existing electromagnetic two-form components. The definitions of give exactly the coefficient fields used in and .
On an oriented spatial 2-surface, the coefficients of and have units T and C m, respectively, so their integrals have units T m = Wb and C. The time-space terms have units (s)(V m)(m) = V s = Wb for , and (s)(A m)(m) = A s = C for . Likewise and each integrate with units C.
A smooth singular simplex has compact Jordan parameter domain and its pullback coefficient is continuous, so [F8] gives a finite Riemann integral. The same local convention gives finite integrals for continuous spacetime 2-forms and 3-forms on their respective compact parameter simplices. For a smooth form this agrees with the usual simplex integral of [F8]. For coefficients as in [F9], the coordinate formula for agrees with the standard one on smooth coefficients by [F6]. The definitions assign and independently from the field and excitation data; [F5] is not applied as a constitutive law here.
