How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Explicit mixing, periodic and sensitivity checks in the bilateral shift
Example
Let with the metric and the shift of The bilateral two-symbol shift space, its metric, its shift map and its cylinder sets, and let cylinders be written .
- A metric computation. Let be arbitrary and let agree with on the coordinates and differ at coordinate only. Then and , which is at most , in accordance with .
- A periodic point in a prescribed cylinder. The word on the coordinates extends to the -periodic sequence with , , and for all . Then and .
- A sensitivity witness. For every and every , let agree with except at coordinate , where . Then and .
- A mixing computation. For the cylinders and , one has for every .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The shift space , the shift and the cylinder notation.
A cylinder is the set of sequences with prescribed finite block; is a metric; and (The bilateral two-symbol shift space, its metric, its shift map and its cylinder sets, The bilateral shift metric is a metric, cylinders are its basic balls, and the shift space is sequentially compact).
The shift is topologically mixing, has dense periodic points and is sensitive with constant (The bilateral two-symbol shift is continuous, topologically mixing, has dense periodic points and is sensitive; it is chaotic in the stated sense, Topological mixing, dense periodic points, sensitive dependence, and the stated chaos list).
Verification
Since for , every term of with vanishes; the only nonzero term is the one with , equal to . Hence , which illustrates the second inclusion of The bilateral shift metric is a metric, cylinders are its basic balls, and the shift space is sequentially compact on a concrete pair.
The displayed sequence is well defined because the prescription is periodic, it lies in the cylinder by construction, and for every , so ; thus is a periodic point of and it lies in the prescribed cylinder, illustrating clause 3 of [L2] on an explicit block.
For as in item 3, exactly one term of the defining sum of is nonzero, so . Moreover , so the term with in the sum for equals and all terms are nonnegative; hence . This realizes the sensitivity constant of [L2] with the pair .
Compute and ; the intersection is nonempty exactly when the three coordinate prescriptions are consistent, which they are as soon as no two of the coordinates , , coincide with conflicting values. For the prescriptions are and , a contradiction, so . For : if the coordinates are and the prescriptions are , , consistent; if the three coordinates are distinct, so a sequence with the prescribed values exists. Hence for every , as claimed, and the mixing condition of [L2] holds on this pair of basic open sets with .
Remarks
-
Item 4 is a finite check of the "all sufficiently large " quantifier: the intersection fails at but succeeds for every . This is exactly the distinction between mixing and the weaker open-set transitivity, and no uniformity over all pairs of cylinders is claimed by the computation.
-
The example uses no measure on ; the statements verified are the topological ones of Topological mixing, dense periodic points, sensitive dependence, and the stated chaos list.
