How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Finite-size mixing and distinguishability conventions
Exact finite-N calculation for two equal ideal-gas compartments at equal temperature; distinguishes adopted indistinguishable-label and fixed-species conventions and reports no empirical observation.
Example
Take two initially separate equal-volume boxes, each containing particles of the same mass at the same , with ideal Hamiltonian . Adopt the classical reference with counting for indistinguishable labels and fixed action reference . Removing the partition while fixing total particle number gives whereas for two distinguishable species with fixed of each, The probability under the final identical-particle positional law of finding exactly particles in each half is , the reciprocal factor inside the logarithm above. The identical-particle entropy change is , hence sublinear in ; no exact zero at finite is claimed. For the distinguishable-species comparison, initially confine species (exactly particles) to the first box and species (exactly ) to the second; after removing the partition, each species can occupy the full volume .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The two ideal-gas preparations, fixed action reference, equal temperature and the stated particle-counting convention.
Each ideal gas uses the adopted classical quotient-counting reference when labels are operationally indistinguishable (Classical particle counting and physical observables).
Both states are canonical at the same with the SI temperature convention SI quantities and unit conventions, and the position volumes are initially per side and after partition removal.
The Gaussian integral proves . For each , is a linear diffeomorphism with Jacobian , so . Applying this scaling separately in each momentum coordinate gives the stated product of Gaussian factors.
For a canonical Gibbs density, the entropy identity is , the equality case of the reference-relative Gibbs identity (Reference-relative entropy and Gibbs variational inequality).
Verification
Given: [A1]–[A2] and the counting, Gaussian and canonical entropy interfaces [F1]–[F2].
For particles in position volume , separate the position integrals and use [F1] in all momentum coordinates. For one coordinate put ; integrating over gives , as the boundary term vanishes by Gaussian decay. Thus the mean kinetic energy is . The position law factorizes into uniform position laws. With , the partition function is For equal total particle count before and after, the terms in [F2] cancel, so the entropy change is times the logarithm of the partition-function ratio.
Initially the ratio is ; for two fixed distinguishable species it is . The first ratio exceeds one because . Under the final positional law, the particles independently fall in either half with probability , so the central binomial probability is , the reciprocal of the identical-particle ratio.
For each integer , monotonicity of on unit intervals gives Indeed the lower bound integrates on for , and the upper bound integrates on for , then adds . Substitution for and cancels the terms linear in in , leaving a quantity bounded in absolute value by a constant multiple of . Therefore as .
Remarks
This is a finite mathematical consequence of the two declared counting conventions. It is not a mixing experiment, and the macroscopically sublinear correction does not make the finite- entropy change vanish.
