How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Exact finite-frequency transverse Maxwell wave

Physical scope

An exact real, source-free plane-wave solution of the prescribed Minkowski Maxwell test model at every stated positive epsilon, with transverse electric/magnetic components. Its nonzero stress prevents it from solving the source-free coupled Einstein–Maxwell equation with Lambda=0 on the unchanged Minkowski metric. This is an ideal solution, not an experiment or photon-energy claim.

Example

On Minkowski spacetime in standard positively oriented inertial coordinates (x0,x,y,z), with signature (−,+,+,+) and future unit observer n=∂0, choose constants κ>0 with units m−1, A∗∈R∖{0} with units T m, and dimensionless 0<ϵ≤1. Define

Aϵ=ϵA∗cos⁡ ⁣(κ(x0−z)ϵ)dx.

The real field Fϵ=dAϵ is an exact source-free Maxwell wave for every such ϵ. Its nonzero components are

F0x=−κA∗sin⁡ ⁣(κ(x0−z)ϵ),Fzx=κA∗sin⁡ ⁣(κ(x0−z)ϵ).

For the inertial observer n=∂0, the SI convention gives Ex=cκA∗sin⁡(κ(x0−z)/ϵ) and By=κA∗sin⁡(κ(x0−z)/ϵ), with all other components zero. At points where the sine is nonzero, the field energy is positive. The field is an exact test-background wave, but it is not an exact source-free coupled Einstein–Maxwell field with Λ=0 on the unchanged Minkowski metric.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: Minkowski metric with signature (−,+,+,+), the stated real potential and constants, and the test-model and Maxwell-stress conventions below.

[F1]

Smooth matter quantities, current and observer observables: the observer electric and magnetic fields are the contractions with F and ⋆gF in the supplied oriented Lorentzian convention, and the electromagnetic stress is the displayed quadratic SI tensor.

[F2]

Observer electric/magnetic reconstruction and invariants: for a positively oriented future tetrad with time vector n and ϵ123=+1, F0i=−Ei/c and Fij=ϵijkBk; the Hodge convention is (⋆gF)ab=12(volg)abcdFcd.

[F3]

Controlled test-wave rays, polarization and Maxwell residual: under the exact C4/C3 regularity, four ansatz constraints and compact-chart bounds, the potential ansatz has the stated affine null rays and transverse polarization class; it asserts no convergence or exact-solution error estimate.

[F4]

Exact source/test-field/backreaction consistency distinction: on a fixed vacuum metric, a nonzero smooth source-free Maxwell field has nonzero quadratic Einstein residual; in particular, for Minkowski with Λ=0 a nonzero field cannot solve the source-free coupled Einstein equation on the unchanged metric.

[F5]

Smooth formal matter, EM tensors and observer quantities: the tangent-bundle smooth structure inherits only the Axiom of Countable Choice ACω.

[A1]

The phase is θ=κ(x0−z), a0=A∗dx, and a1=0. The real finite-frequency potential is the real part of ϵA∗eiθ/ϵdx.

[A2]

The inherited ACω setting of [F5] is in force when applying [F2] and [F3]; no full Axiom of Choice or stronger choice principle is assumed.

Verification

1.1givenF3F5A1A2algebra

For θ=κ(x0−z) and a0=A∗dx, k=κ(dx0−dz) is nowhere zero and g−1(k,k)=−κ2+κ2=0, while g−1(k,a0)=0. In the stated inertial coordinates a0 and k have constant components and Minkowski curvature is zero, so La0=0 and Pa0=0; also ∇a(a0)a=0. Since a1=0, both La1=0 and ika(a1)a=0. These verify all four constraints. On each compact coordinate set the coefficient bounds of [F3] hold with K0=κ and D0=C0=B0=B1=0. The inherited ACω hypothesis in [A2] matches the exact mathematical supplier framework [F5]. Finally a0 is not proportional to k because A∗≠0 and k has no dx component, so its transverse polarization class is nonzero. Hence [F3] supplies the affine null rays and that nonzero polarization class for this ansatz.

1.2F1F2A1algebra

Write ψ=κ(x0−z)/ϵ. Differentiating the real potential in [A1] gives F0x=−κA∗sin⁡ψ and Fzx=κA∗sin⁡ψ, with all other independent components zero. To check dF=0 directly, its only possibly nonzero three-form component is (dF)0zx=∂0Fzx+∂zFx0; these terms are κ2A∗ϵ−1cos⁡ψ and −κ2A∗ϵ−1cos⁡ψ, so they cancel. Raising indices with η=diag⁡(−1,1,1,1) gives F0x=Fzx=κA∗sin⁡ψ. Thus ∂aFax=∂0F0x+∂zFzx=0 by the same cancellation. For the other divergence components, ∂aFa0=∂xFx0=0, ∂aFay=0, and ∂aFaz=∂xFxz=0, since the field is independent of x,y. This proves dFϵ=0 and the divergence-form equation. To verify the source-free form equation directly, put f=κA∗sin⁡ψ. The existing Hodge formula [F2], with the stated orientation and raised components, gives (⋆gFϵ)02=f and (⋆gFϵ)23=f, all other independent components zero; hence ⋆gFϵ=f(dx0−dz)∧dy. Moreover df=(κ2A∗/ϵ)cos⁡ψ (dx0−dz). The coordinate exterior derivative therefore gives d(⋆gFϵ)=df∧(dx0−dz)∧dy=0, since the repeated covector wedges to zero. Thus both differential-form Maxwell equations hold, without appealing to a form/divergence equivalence. From [F1], Ex=cFx0=cFx0=cκA∗sin⁡ψ. Also By=−(⋆gF)y0 by [F1]. The Hodge formula in [F2], (volg)y0xz=+1, and Fxz=Fxz=−κA∗sin⁡ψ give (⋆gF)y0=Fxz=−κA∗sin⁡ψ, hence By=κA∗sin⁡ψ. All other observer components vanish because the only field components are the stated 0x and zx components.

2.1F1step 1.2algebra

Substitution of the components from step 1.2 into the tensor formula of [F1] gives TEM00=(Ex2/c2+By2)/(2μ0)=(ε0Ex2+By2/μ0)/2. Because Ex=cBy, this is u=By2/μ0>0 whenever the sine is nonzero.

3.1F4step 1.2step 2.1algebra∎

Minkowski has Gab=0, so the source-free coupled Einstein equation with cosmological constant Λ=0 on the unchanged metric would require zero Einstein residual. Apply [F4] to the source-free field of step 1.2 by taking its reference field to be F0=Fϵ and scale δ=1; since the field is nonzero wherever the sine is nonzero, the residual is nonzero there. This excludes that exact coupled solution while retaining the exact Maxwell test-field solution of step 1.2.
