How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Observer electric/magnetic reconstruction and invariants
Statement
Let be an open set with smooth observer congruence , let be a smooth real two-form on , and let be the coordinate conversion parameter of Oriented Lorentzian fields, observers and coordinate conventions. Define covectors
Here is the positive coordinate-conversion parameter of Oriented Lorentzian fields, observers and coordinate conventions, with SI unit in its length-coordinate convention. The names electric and magnetic distinguish these two covectors; for arbitrary mathematical no physical field unit or measurement is assigned.
For each , define the rest covector space by
The musical isomorphism maps the vector rest space onto : iff . Moreover, , so the restriction of to is positive definite by The observer rest-space decomposition and the spatial projection. The covectors and annihilate ; define . Then
Equivalently, in any positively oriented future tetrad with , and with in its oriented spatial triad, the components satisfy and . These are pointwise mathematical decompositions of an arbitrary two-form; no Maxwell equation or physical observation is assumed.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: An oriented, time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifold, a smooth observer congruence , a smooth two-form , and a positive scalar .
Every point in the domain of has a neighborhood with a positively oriented -adapted orthonormal tetrad. The local assertion does not give a global tetrad or an orthogonal foliation. (Oriented Lorentzian fields, observers and coordinate conventions, Observers, rest spaces and the spatial projection at an event, The observer rest-space decomposition and the spatial projection)
In a positively oriented orthonormal coframe , put and . For an increasing index set , let be its increasing complement, let be the sign of the permutation to , and set . Then ; in particular and . For two-forms and . (Lorentzian exterior calculus and Hodge star)
The musical isomorphism is with inverse , and ; hence , and raises the indices in . (The inverse metric, musical isomorphisms and index raising)
Wedges of two-forms commute, and the wedge product is associative and graded-commutative. (Differential forms form a graded commutative algebra)
The smooth geometric background inherits from The Axiom of Countable Choice (). The finite component argument uses no full Axiom of Choice.
Proof
Antisymmetry of gives . The Hodge dual is also a two-form, so . Thus both covectors restrict to the positive rest covector space.
Fix a point and use [F1], on the inherited background [A1], to choose a positively oriented orthonormal coframe with . The definition gives . For , the component formula in [F2] gives , , and ; therefore , , and , equivalently . The basis formula in [F2] gives . Together with , this matches all six independent components of and proves .
In this coframe, and . Antisymmetry counts each independent pair twice, so . The spatial coframe induces the Euclidean inner product on the rest covectors, so these sums are and . This proves the first invariant.
Write . The pure electric and pure magnetic terms wedge to zero. By [F4], each matching electric/magnetic pair occurs twice and contributes . Therefore . Both invariant identities are tensorial, so the local calculation holds at every point of .
