How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The inverse metric, musical isomorphisms and index raising
Definition
Let be a time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold and let (Smooth time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifolds: the geometric objects of the model). The cotangent space is the algebraic dual of (Linear functionals and the algebraic dual ).
Musical isomorphisms. Define the flat map
so that ; it is -linear by bilinearity of . Its kernel is because is nondegenerate, and since the coordinate derivations of a chart form a basis of (Coordinate derivations form a basis of the tangent space); hence is a linear isomorphism and has an inverse .
Inverse metric. The inverse metric at is the symmetric bilinear form
It is symmetric because is, and it is nondegenerate: if for all , then , so and hence .
Components in a chart. Let be a smooth chart and the components of ; let be the differential of the coordinate function at (The differential of a smooth map), so that . Define the components of the inverse metric in this chart by
so that ; equivalently is the inverse matrix of at every , that is
because and also . In particular . The components depend smoothly on ; this is proved in Smoothness and transformation of the inverse-metric components ↗.
Raising, lowering and metric trace. Let be a smooth symmetric covariant -tensor field on an open set (Smooth covariant 2-tensor fields on a smooth manifold). At each define the endomorphism
characterized by for all ; it is self-adjoint for because is symmetric. Its metric trace is
with the trace of an endomorphism as in The basis-independent trace of an endomorphism of a finite-dimensional vector space. In a chart the raised, mixed and doubly raised components are
the last identity obtained by evaluating in a -orthonormal basis , where by The timelike set has exactly two convex components, described in orthonormal coordinates so that , which is the trace of the endomorphism in that basis. All these operations are pointwise and depend only on , and the duality pairing, not on a chart.
Conventions. Raising and lowering apply to one index at a time and preserve index order; , and denote the same tensor with indices positioned by . The musical isomorphisms and the inverse metric are defined for every smooth Lorentzian four-manifold of this library; no choice principle is used in this definition, every ingredient being pointwise linear algebra over together with the pointwise nondegeneracy of .
