How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Geodesics, proper time and parallel transport of the flat model

Example

Let M=R4 carry the identity chart x=(x0,x1,x2,x3), the flat Lorentzian metric g=diag⁡(−1,1,1,1) and the time orientation N=∂0, so that (M,g,N) is a time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold (Smooth time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifolds: the geometric objects of the model). Then:

  1. The coordinate connection ∇ with Γabc=0 in the identity chart is the metric-selected connection of g, and its geodesics are exactly the affine lines t↦p+tv.
  2. For a future timelike geodesic with tangent v, the proper-time increment over [t0,t] is −g(v,v) (t−t0)/c; in particular the future timelike geodesic through p with four-velocity u is τ↦p+τu, and its four-velocity u has g(u,u)=−c2.
  3. Parallel transport by ∇ along any piecewise smooth curve preserves the components in the identity chart: DtV=0 if and only if V has constant components; hence transport is a g-isometry, and the transported vector depends only on the endpoints.
  4. The exponential map is exp⁡p(v)=p+v on all of TpM, with d(exp⁡p)0=id⁡, and the identity chart translated to p gives gab(p)=ηab, ∂agbc(p)=0 exactly (not merely at first order).

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The flat Lorentzian four-manifold (R4,g) with identity chart x and g=diag⁡(−1,1,1,1), and the coordinate connection ∇ with Γabc=0 in this chart.

[L1]

The identity chart is global, its coordinate fields are g-orthonormal, and g is symmetric nondegenerate with the given components; the time orientation is N=∂0 (Smooth time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifolds: the geometric objects of the model).

[L2]

A connection that is torsion-free and g-compatible is the metric-selected connection, uniquely, and a torsion-free connection with Γabc=Γacb plus the compatibility identity is metric-selected (Metric compatibility, torsion freedom and the metric-selected connection class, Existence and uniqueness of the metric-selected connection of a nondegenerate metric, and its extension to tensor fields).

[L3]

In a chart, a geodesic satisfies x¨k+∑i,jΓkijx˙ix˙j=0, and the covariant derivative along a curve has components ∂tVa+∑b,cΓabcγ˙bVc (Coordinate geodesic equation, Geodesic of an affine connection, Covariant differentiation along curves: metric pairing, parallel transport and geodesic speed, Covariant derivative along a curve is independent of frame and extension).

[L4]

Proper time along a future timelike worldline has density −g(γ′,γ′)/c, and the four-velocity is U=cγ′/−g(γ′,γ′) (Timelike worldlines, proper time, length and four-velocity on a Lorentzian four-manifold, Proper time is well defined and reparametrization invariant; the four-velocity is its proper-time tangent).

[L5]

The geodesic initial-value problem has a unique maximal solution, and exp⁡p(v)=γp,v(1) with d(exp⁡p)0=id⁡ (The geodesic initial-value problem and the exponential map of the metric-selected connection, Christoffel symbols of an affine connection).

1.1L1L2algebra

The connection ∇ has Γ≡0, so it is torsion-free; and the compatibility identity ∂agbc=∑d(Γdabgdc+Γdacgbd) holds because both sides are 0 with constant metric components and vanishing coefficients. By [L2] it is the metric-selected connection of g.

2.1step 1.1L3L5algebra

Substituting Γ=0 into [L3], the geodesic equation is x¨k=0, whose solutions are exactly the affine lines t↦p+tv on parameter intervals; by [L5] the maximal geodesic through (p,v) is this line extended to all of R.

2.2step 1.1L3L2algebra

If V=∑aVa∂a along a curve, then by [L3] DtV=0 if and only if ∂tVa=0 for all a, that is, the components are constant; so parallel sections are exactly the constant-component fields along the curve and Pγ is the identity identification of fibres in the identity chart. Hence transport preserves g and is independent of the path (it depends only on the endpoints), by [L2] and the component computation.

3.1step 2.1L4algebra

Let γ(t)=p+tv with g(v,v)<0 and g(v,∂0)<0; then γ is a future timelike worldline and its density is the constant −g(v,v). By [L4] the proper-time increment over [t0,t] is −g(v,v)(t−t0)/c, and the four-velocity is the constant vector U=cv/−g(v,v) with g(U,U)=−c2. In particular, for the future timelike unit vector u with g(u,u)=−c2 the worldline τ↦p+τu is parametrized by proper time up to its origin.

4.1step 2.1L5algebra∎

By step 2.1, the geodesic through p with initial tangent v is t↦p+tv on all of R, so 1∈Ip,v for every v and exp⁡p(v)=p+v on all of TpM. Differentiating v↦p+v at 0 gives the identity, and the chart y:=x−x(p) centered at p is the identity chart translated; in it gab=diag⁡(−1,1,1,1) identically, so gab(p)=ηab and ∂agbc(p)=0 hold exactly, not merely at first order.
