How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

The Killing current of a static dust congruence in flat space

Example

Let M=R4 carry the identity chart, the flat metric g=diag⁡(−1,1,1,1), the time orientation N=∂0 and the chart orientation, with metric-selected connection ∇ (Smooth time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifolds: the geometric objects of the model, Metric compatibility, torsion freedom and the metric-selected connection class). Let ξ:=∂0, let ρ:R4→(0,∞) be smooth with ∂0ρ=0, and let u:=∂0, so that (ρ,u) is a dust model on M with tensor Tab=ρuaub (The dust matter model: rest density, four-velocity, stress-energy and dust system). Then:

  1. ξ=∂0 is a Killing field.
  2. The current Ja:=Tabξb equals J=−ρ u, and ∇aJa=0.
  3. ιJvolg=−ρ dx1∧dx2∧dx3: the current 3-form is (minus) the rest density carried by the constant-x0 slices, and its flux through corresponding regions of two slices is equal because ∂0ρ=0.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The flat Lorentzian four-manifold (R4,g) with identity chart, metric-selected connection ∇, the vector field ξ=∂0, the dust model (ρ,u) with u=∂0 and ∂0ρ=0, and its tensor Tab=ρuaub.

[L1]

ξ is a Killing field of (M,g) exactly when Lξg=0; equivalently ∇aξb+∇bξa=0 (Killing fields of a Lorentzian metric, Killing fields and conserved currents, and on-shell conservation of the Hilbert stress-energy tensor clause (a)).

[L2]

For symmetric T with ∇aTab=0 and Killing ξ, the current Ja=Tabξb satisfies ∇aJa=0 (Killing fields and conserved currents, and on-shell conservation of the Hilbert stress-energy tensor clause (c)).

[L3]

The dust system holds for (ρ,u) when ∂0ρ=0, hence ∇aTab=0 (Divergence-free dust is exactly the dust system, and divergence-free perfect fluid is exactly the fluid equations clause (a)).

[L4]

On the identity chart Γ≡0, so ∇ is the coordinate connection; ξb=ηb0=−δ0b, and volg=dx0∧dx1∧dx2∧dx3 with ι∂0volg=dx1∧dx2∧dx3 (Existence and uniqueness of the metric-selected connection of a nondegenerate metric, and its extension to tensor fields, The inverse metric, musical isomorphisms and index raising, The metric volume form, current flux through 3-faces and finite-chain charges, Interior product of a form by a vector field).

Verification

technique · direct; check the Killing equation with the constant metric, compute the current and its divergence, and evaluate the current form
1.1L1L4algebra

(Killing field.) In the identity chart the metric components are constant, so ∂cgab=0 and, by [L4], Γ≡0; hence ∇aξb+∇bξa=∂aξb+∂bξa. Since ξ=∂0 has constant components, ∇aξb=0 for all a,b and the Killing equation of [L1] holds.

1.2L3L4algebra

(Conservation of the dust tensor.) By [L4] and ∂0ρ=0, ∇a(ρua)=∂0ρ=0 and ua∇aub=0: the dust system holds, so [L3] gives ∇aTab=0.

2.1step 1.1step 1.2L2L4algebra

(The current.) By [L4], Ja=Tabξb=ρuaubξb=ρua(u0ξ0)=ρua(1⋅(−1))=−ρua; that is, J=−ρu=(−ρ,0,0,0). By [L4], ∇aJa=∂0(−ρ)=0; consistently, steps 1.1 and 1.2 put us in the hypotheses of [L2].

3.1step 2.1L4algebra∎

(The current form.) By [L4], ιJvolg=ι−ρ∂0volg=−ρ ι∂0volg=−ρ dx1∧dx2∧dx3. Consequently, for a smooth singular 3-chain whose image lies in a constant-x0 slice and whose orientation is the chart orientation of that slice, the flux is −∫ρ, the negative of the integrated rest density over the chain's parameter domain; since ∂0ρ=0 and ιJvolg has no dt component, corresponding chains in two different slices have equal flux. This completes the verification.

Remarks

  • Signs. The minus sign in clauses 2-3 is the sign of the orientation conventions: the adapted unit normal of a constant-x0 slice pointing in the +∂0 direction is timelike, so the flux formula of the density theorem carries a factor ε=−1. Reversing the orientation of the slice or of M flips the sign of the flux but not the conservation statement.

  • Reading. The current here is an energy current: the dust coefficient ρ is the rest-energy density, and Ja=Tabξb=−ρua. Under the physical normalization U=cu and ρm=ρ/c2, this is Ja=−cρmUa, not the rest-mass current ρmUa. The example asserts no empirical fact about matter distributions.
