How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Classical and strong-field endpoints of the finite open chain

Example

Let h,J∈R.

For the finite open chain on N≥1 sites, let HN=(C2)⊗N and HN(h,J)=−h∑j=1NZj−J∑j=1N−1XjXj+1 as in the open-chain definition. For sj∈{−1,1} set xsj=2−1/2(1,sj)T, z+1=(1,0)T, and z−1=(0,1)T, and define the X- and Z-product basis vectors ∣s⟩X=⨂j=1Nxsj and ∣s⟩Z=⨂j=1Nzsj for s=(s1,…,sN)∈{−1,1}N. These are eigenbases with Xj∣s⟩X=sj∣s⟩X and Zj∣s⟩Z=sj∣s⟩Z. When HN is diagonal in one of these product bases B∈{X,Z}, let EB(s) be its diagonal matrix entry at ∣s⟩B; a ground configuration in that basis is a label s minimizing EB over {−1,1}N.

When h=0 and J>0, the ground configurations in the X product basis are exactly s=(1,…,1) and s=(−1,…,−1). When J=0 and h≠0, the unique ground configuration in the Z product basis has sj=1 at every site if h>0 and sj=−1 at every site if h<0; thus the minimizing orientation is specified for both signs of h. For β>0 in J−1 and h,J in joules, the trace is ZN(β,h,J)=∏r2cosh⁡(βϵr/2) with the open-chain mode energies ϵr. For each fixed finite N, the function ZN(β,h,J)=Tr⁡HN(e−βHN(h,J)) is strictly positive and real-analytic on R3; here real-analytic means that near every real triple (β,h,J) it is represented by a convergent real power series in those three parameters.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: Countable Choice; N≥1; finite-chain matrices Xj,Zj; real β,h,J; and the open-chain Gibbs trace formula.

[A1]

Countable Choice is carried from the exact finite-trace prerequisite (The Axiom of Countable Choice (ACω) and Exact quadratic reduction and Gibbs trace of the open Ising chain).

[F1]

Open transverse Ising chain and ordered Majorana operators: HN(h,J)=−h∑j=1NZj−J∑j=1N−1XjXj+1 on (C2)⊗N, with the Xj,Zj Pauli matrices on their displayed sites.

[F2]

Exact quadratic reduction and Gibbs trace of the open Ising chain: the finite open-chain Gibbs trace equals ∏r2cosh⁡(βϵr/2) under its stated Countable Choice and parameter hypotheses.

[F3]

Finite matrix spectral and state calculus: every finite Hermitian matrix has real eigenvalues and an orthonormal eigenbasis, and the finite trace is basis-independent.

Verification

1.1givenF1algebra

At h=0, an X-basis configuration s=(s1,…,sN)∈{−1,1}N has energy −J∑j=1N−1sjsj+1. Each bond contributes at least −J, with equality exactly when sj=sj+1. Since the open chain is connected, all bonds attain equality exactly for the two constant configurations; for N=1 the empty bond sum leaves its two basis configurations degenerate as well.

1.2givenF1algebra

At J=0, a Z-basis configuration s∈{−1,1}N has energy −h∑jsj. If h>0, each site uniquely minimizes its term by taking sj=1; if h<0, each site uniquely minimizes its term by taking sj=−1. Thus the unique minimizing Z-configuration has the orientation stated in the Example.

1.3A1F1F2

For β>0, [F2] gives the stated product trace for the exact HN of [F1] and its open-chain energies. The trace itself is the ordinary trace of the finite matrix exponential on the 2N-dimensional space.

For an endomorphism C of HN, use the operator norm ∥C∥op:=sup⁡{∥Cψ∥HN:∥ψ∥HN=1} from the finite product inner product. The entries of −βHN(h,J) are polynomials in β,h,J. On each compact set of complex parameter triples this matrix has a finite uniform operator-norm bound C. Define its complex-parameter exponential by exp⁡(−βHN)=∑m=0∞(−βHN)m/m!; the summands have norm at most Cm/m!, so the series converges uniformly on each such compact set. The matrix exponential power series is holomorphic in its entries (that is, locally represented by convergent complex power series), so composing it with the polynomial matrix entries makes each matrix entry, and its finite trace, holomorphic in (β,h,J). Their restrictions to R3 are real-analytic in the sense defined in the Statement. For real parameters, [F3]'s spectral exponential agrees with this series by applying the scalar exponential series to each real eigenvalue λr of the Hermitian HN; hence ZN=∑re−βλr>0. This proves analyticity for each fixed finite N only; it gives no conclusion about the existence or analyticity of a limit as N→∞.

Remarks

The example is a finite-dimensional model calculation. The A-page band closing alone gives no conclusion about the existence or analyticity of a limit of N−1log⁡ZN as N→∞.
