How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

A concave entropy supremum not attained on an open energy-partition set

Physical scope

An abstract two-system model with positive thermodynamic coordinates, fixed total energy, volume, and composition, and an open feasible energy-partition set; no real-material claim.

Example

Take two independent separated one-species systems A and B with material constitutions cA,cB inside an isolated compound. Write DA:=DcA and DB:=DcB for their equilibrium domains; each is (0,∞)3 in the dimensionless coordinates (U^i,V^i,n^i) of Equilibrium state domains, and each full domain is designated as an open single-phase chart. Fix positive volumes and amounts V^A,V^B,n^A,n^B, total internal energy UA+UB=1 J, and a thermal-contact protocol that permits internal energy transfer while keeping volumes and amounts fixed, as in Thermal contact family and constraints. Adopt the retained product endpoint set and the separately specified total maps below:

ϕ(x)=((x,V^A,n^A),(1−x,V^B,n^B)),F={ϕ(x):0<x<1}⊆DA×DB.

Thus x=U^A=UA/(1 J) and 1−x=U^B=UB/(1 J). With s∗=1 J K−1, adopt the toy constitutive entropies SA=2s∗U^A and SB=s∗U^B. They are finite, continuous, affine (hence concave), C2, and have positive SU on the stated open domains. For each λ>0, use the same formula in the own coordinates of the distinct tags cA(λ) and cB(λ). Then the coordinate scaling δλ of Additive separated systems and tagged bulk scaling gives ScA(λ)(δλxA)=λSA(xA) and ScB(λ)(δλxB)=λSB(xB). Adopt Stot(xA,xB):=SA(xA)+SB(xB) as additional entropy data on the retained product endpoints, independently of simple aggregate composition. Its value on F is Stot(ϕ(x))=s∗(1+x). The model-declared feasible set is an open energy-partition interval, so its entropy has a finite supremum but no attained maximum. This is a conditional model example, not a claim about a real material.

For complete contact data, set E:=(0,1) and take ZA⊔B=ZA⊔Beq=F, with constituent maps ξA,ξB the two coordinate projections and contact family T:={(cA,xA):xA∈DA}∪{(cB,xB):xB∈DB}. The two constitutions share one species label. Give the aggregate constitution the domain DA⊔B=(0,∞)3, and set ξA⊔B(ϕ(x))=(1,V^A+V^B,n^A+n^B). This is a supplied aggregate coordinate map for process records, not an assertion of an aggregate entropy identity. For each x,y∈E with y≥x, admit the record Px,y of Thermodynamic process records and transfer conventions on I=[0,1] seconds: its aggregate endpoints are both this constant coordinate tuple, zx,y(t)=ϕ(x) for 0≤t<1 and zx,y(1)=ϕ(y), its control record is (x,y), and its signed transfer record is the real number x−y. Declare the control-record set to be {(x,y)∈E2:y≥x} and the transfer-record set to be R. Each transfer record supplies HPx,yin,HPx,yout:[0,1]→[0,∞), both identically zero, with numerical values in joules; these maps are nondecreasing and start at zero. No path regularity is required by the supplier. The outer boundary admits no matter or energy transfer; fixed constituent volumes and amounts and zero contact work are retained constraints. Supply fixed positive constituent and compound masses and zero endpoint center-of-mass velocities in one Galilean chart, and no separately tracked external-field energy. Thus these are core closed records, with Q[Px,y]=Won[Px,y]=0. For the contact-record set PT={Px,y:x,y∈E, y≥x} supply qA→B[Px,y]=x−y in joule magnitudes as in Thermal contact family and constraints. The constituent energy changes are (y−x) J and (x−y) J. Each feasible endpoint has its self-record; nonzero transfers occur when y>x. No contact-equilibrium designation or relaxation law is assumed.

To check consistency with the separately scoped aggregate postulates, take CAB:={(xA,xB)∈DA×DB:U^A=U^B} and let κAB sum their three coordinates. Adopt SA⊔B(U^,V^,n^)=32s∗U^. On this nonempty admission set, SA+SB=3s∗U^A=SA⊔B(κAB(xA,xB)), and all dimensioned coordinates add. Use the same aggregate formula on its scaled tags and all positive-coordinate scaling domains. Only the retained partition x=1/2 is in this aggregate admission set; there the product entropy and aggregate entropy both equal 3s∗/2. All other retained partitions have separately adopted product entropy, so no aggregate entropy identity is asserted for them. Totals and entropy on these complete partitioned endpoints are additional declared maps allowed by Isolated compound and feasible equilibrium set. The maximum criterion of Stable equilibrium requires an attained global entropy maximum is used on their stated entropy sum; no aggregate-composition or accessibility theorem is claimed.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The equilibrium-coordinate convention of Equilibrium state domains, the contact restrictions of Thermal contact family and constraints, the feasible-set definition Isolated compound and feasible equilibrium set, and the entropy and equilibrium-maximum postulates.

[F1]

Each adopted entropy is a finite scalar measured in J K−1 (Concave macroscopic fundamental entropy).

[F2]

On every specified convex region the entropy is continuous and satisfies the stated Jensen concavity inequality (Concave macroscopic fundamental entropy).

[F3]

The admitted separated pairs form a designated subset CAB⊆DA×DB (Additive separated systems and tagged bulk scaling).

[F4]

Under the composition map, the dimensioned total energy of an admitted pair is UA⊔B=UA+UB (Additive separated systems and tagged bulk scaling).

[F5]

Entropy is additive under the composition map on its admitted independent separated pairs; no aggregate entropy identity is inferred for unadmitted retained partitions (Concave macroscopic fundamental entropy).

[F6]

For x∈Bc,λ, the tagged bulk map is δλ(x)=(λU^,λV^,λn^1,…,λn^r), and the entropy postulate assumes Sc(λ)(δλx)=λSc(x) on that domain (Additive separated systems and tagged bulk scaling, Concave macroscopic fundamental entropy).

[F7]

An equilibrium feasible set may be noncompact and need not contain an entropy maximizer (Isolated compound and feasible equilibrium set).

[F8]

Stable equilibrium in this route requires an attained global maximum on the exact feasible set (Stable equilibrium requires an attained global entropy maximum).

[L1]

The library's Cauchy-sequence reals form a complete ordered field (The Cauchy-sequence reals have the least-upper-bound property). Applying Every complete ordered field is Archimedean to this field, for every real t there is a natural number n≥1 with t<n, where n denotes its canonical real image.

[L2]

The range of every nonempty finite list of real numbers has a greatest member (Every nonempty finite set of reals has a maximum and a minimum).

[L4]

A real number u is the supremum of a set E⊆R exactly when it is an upper bound of E and u≤v for every upper bound v of E (Complete ordered field (least-upper-bound property)).

[A1]

DA=DB=(0,∞)3 in dimensionless (U^,V^,n^) coordinates, with each full domain designated as an open single-phase chart; V^A,V^B,n^A,n^B>0 are fixed; total energy is 1 J; the retained feasible set is F={ϕ(x):0<x<1} and its separately adopted entropy is Stot=SA+SB; s∗=1 J K−1; and SA=2s∗U^A, SB=s∗U^B. For every λ>0, choose BcA,λ=DA and BcB,λ=DB, designate DcA(λ)=DA and DcB(λ)=DB in their own dimensionless coordinates, and set ScA(λ)(U^,V^,n^)=2s∗U^ and ScB(λ)(U^,V^,n^)=s∗U^ on those domains.

[A3]

The contact configuration sets, tagged family, endpoint maps, admitted core records, internal transfer map, and nonempty aggregate admission set and entropy are exactly those in the Example. Product total energy is UA+UB and product total entropy is SA+SB.

[A2]

Compactness uses the inherited Euclidean topology: every cover of F by relatively open subsets must have a finite subcover.

Verification

Given: The model [A1] and [A3], the compactness convention [A2], facts [F1]–[F8], and [L1]–[L4].

Each entropy in [A1] is finite, affine and continuous on the convex domain (0,∞)3, hence concave; it is C2 with SA,U=2 K−1 and SB,U=1 K−1. The tagged scalings satisfy [F6]. On the equal-energy aggregate admission set in [A3], SA+SB=32s∗(U^A+U^B), so [F3]–[F5] hold there with the specified affine aggregate entropy, positive energy derivative and tagged scaling. The separately adopted product entropy gives Stot(ϕ(x))=s∗(1+x) for every retained partition. The supplied records have equilibrium endpoint configurations with the stated constituent and aggregate maps, belong to the core closed class, and have zero external transfers. Internal qA→B[Px,y]=x−y in joule magnitudes gives changes (y−x) J and (x−y) J in the constituents, preserving the total energy and all fixed volumes and amounts. Every feasible point has its self-record; y>x permits nonzero internal heat transfer and increases product entropy by s∗(y−x). Thus the stated endpoint and contact model is consistent without assigning varying partition entropy to one aggregate coordinate tuple.

1.2givenA1A2F7L1L2L3algebra

For each integer n≥2, put Un={ϕ(x)∈F:x<1−1/n}. It is relatively open: if ϕ(x)∈Un, then ϵ=1−1/n−x>0, and any ϕ(y)∈F with ∥ϕ(y)−ϕ(x)∥2<ϵ has coordinate difference ϕ(y)−ϕ(x)=(y−x,0,0,−(y−x),0,0). By [L3], ∥ϕ(y)−ϕ(x)∥2=2∣y−x∣, so ∣y−x∣<ϵ and y<1−1/n. Given any x∈(0,1), [L1] applied to 1/(1−x)>1 gives an integer n>1/(1−x); then n≥2 and x<1−1/n, so the Un cover F. For any nonempty finite subfamily with indices n1,…,nk, [L2] gives a greatest index N, and its union is UN. The feasible state ϕ(1−1/(2N)) belongs to F but not UN, so this cover has no finite subcover. By [A2] and [F7], F is noncompact and has no assumed attainment guarantee.

2.1givenA1step 1.1algebra

For every x∈(0,1), the entropy value is Stot(ϕ(x))=s∗(1+x)<2s∗ because s∗>0. Thus 2s∗ is an upper bound of the feasible entropy values.

2.2givenA1L1step 1.1algebra

Given any entropy tolerance ε>0 in J K−1, apply [L1] to 2+s∗/ε to choose n∈N with n>2+s∗/ε. Then xn:=1−1/n∈(0,1) and 0<2s∗−Stot(ϕ(xn))=s∗/n<ε. Hence feasible entropy values lie arbitrarily close to 2s∗ from below.

2.3givenA1L1L4step 1.1algebra

Let u be any upper bound of the feasible entropy values. If u<2s∗, set d:=2s∗−u>0 and apply [L1] to 2+s∗/d to choose n∈N with n>2+s∗/d. Then x:=1−1/n∈(0,1) and Stot(ϕ(x))=2s∗−s∗/n>2s∗−d=u, contradicting that u is an upper bound. Therefore 2s∗≤u for every upper bound u. By [L4], sup⁡{Stot(ϕ(x)):0<x<1}=2s∗.

2.4givenA1step 1.1algebra

For every x∈(0,1), y=(x+1)/2 also lies in (0,1) and satisfies y>x. Hence Stot(ϕ(y))=s∗(1+y)>s∗(1+x)=Stot(ϕ(x)) because s∗>0. No feasible state maximizes entropy; the supremum 2s∗ is not attained because x=1 is excluded.

3.1F8step 2.4∎

By [F8] stable equilibrium in this route requires an attained global maximum on the exact feasible set. Since no maximum is attained, this model has no stable equilibrium under that criterion.
