How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

2 · Summary
These conditional examples distinguish a model deduction from an empirical report. The idealized compression calculation uses an adopted gas model and work protocol; it does not report a measurement or prove the second-law postulate. The two feasible-set examples show why global attainment and full feasible-set scope must be stated explicitly. The local-maximum example does not assert that any real material is metastable; applying that term to a material requires a separately specified kinetic model.

Entropy increase in an idealized adiabatic compression
A conditional one-mole monatomic ideal-gas model with positive initial temperature and volume, a sudden constant-load compression to a stated final volume, dissipative settling, and no empirical claim.
Example
This is a conditional model calculation, not a report of an observed compression. The gas is taken to have one mole, , of a model whose state variables are a positive temperature in kelvins, volume in cubic metres, and uniform pressure in pascals. The model is monatomic and ideal in the explicit sense that its molar constant-volume heat capacity is , its internal energy is , and its equation of state is . Its entropy difference is
for positive reference values in K and in . At initial equilibrium let and . A piston protocol suddenly raises the external pressure from the initial value to a constant final load , compresses the gas adiabatically to , and dissipatively settles it to a final equilibrium state. The protocol admits no reverse record, so it is irreversible by Reversible thermodynamic process record. The idealization assumes no change in the included load's entropy; all numerical behavior is a model assumption and deduction, not an empirical measurement.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The process and sign conventions of Thermodynamic process records and transfer conventions, the closed-record first-law postulate First-law energy balance for closed process records, and the stated ideal-gas model.
A process record is adiabatic exactly when for every : no thermal energy crosses its selected outer boundary throughout the record. This implies ; denotes work done on the system (Thermodynamic process records and transfer conventions).
For every admitted closed record in the stated class, (First-law energy balance for closed process records).
The adopted entropy is a finite scalar state function with values measured in (Concave macroscopic fundamental entropy).
is strictly increasing, , and for positive (The natural logarithm as the inverse of the exponential function, Order, continuity, range, and the product, quotient, and reciprocal laws for the natural logarithm).
The ideal-gas equations and entropy difference are exactly those stated in the Example; has units and .
The gas is the system inside the declared outer boundary: no matter crosses it, its material constitution is fixed, and its mechanical model supplies a total mass and center-of-mass velocities in the fixed chart of Thermodynamic process records and transfer conventions. The gas center of mass is at rest at both endpoint preparations, so ; no separately tracked external-field potential energy changes (the model may take that term to be absent), so . Thus the admitted record is in as defined by Thermodynamic process records and transfer conventions. Its protocol has for every , hence , a constant external load during compression, and . The final equilibrium obeys , and the initial equilibrium obeys . The apparatus is stipulated to dissipatively settle and to have zero entropy change.
Verification
Given: , , the premises [F1]–[F3], the logarithm laws [L1], and the model/protocol assumptions [A1]–[A2].
Put . The equilibrium equations give . The first-law balance gives , hence . Solving yields and .
The entropy difference is therefore . By [L1], , since and is strictly increasing with . Since , .
A concave entropy supremum not attained on an open energy-partition set
An abstract two-system model with positive thermodynamic coordinates, fixed total energy, volume, and composition, and an open feasible energy-partition set; no real-material claim.
Example
Take two independent separated one-species systems and with material constitutions inside an isolated compound. Write and for their equilibrium domains; each is in the dimensionless coordinates of Equilibrium state domains, and each full domain is designated as an open single-phase chart. Fix positive volumes and amounts , total internal energy , and a thermal-contact protocol that permits internal energy transfer while keeping volumes and amounts fixed, as in Thermal contact family and constraints. Adopt the retained product endpoint set and the separately specified total maps below:
Thus and . With , adopt the toy constitutive entropies and . They are finite, continuous, affine (hence concave), , and have positive on the stated open domains. For each , use the same formula in the own coordinates of the distinct tags and . Then the coordinate scaling of Additive separated systems and tagged bulk scaling gives and . Adopt as additional entropy data on the retained product endpoints, independently of simple aggregate composition. Its value on is . The model-declared feasible set is an open energy-partition interval, so its entropy has a finite supremum but no attained maximum. This is a conditional model example, not a claim about a real material.
For complete contact data, set and take , with constituent maps the two coordinate projections and contact family . The two constitutions share one species label. Give the aggregate constitution the domain , and set . This is a supplied aggregate coordinate map for process records, not an assertion of an aggregate entropy identity. For each with , admit the record of Thermodynamic process records and transfer conventions on seconds: its aggregate endpoints are both this constant coordinate tuple, for and , its control record is , and its signed transfer record is the real number . Declare the control-record set to be and the transfer-record set to be . Each transfer record supplies , both identically zero, with numerical values in joules; these maps are nondecreasing and start at zero. No path regularity is required by the supplier. The outer boundary admits no matter or energy transfer; fixed constituent volumes and amounts and zero contact work are retained constraints. Supply fixed positive constituent and compound masses and zero endpoint center-of-mass velocities in one Galilean chart, and no separately tracked external-field energy. Thus these are core closed records, with . For the contact-record set supply in joule magnitudes as in Thermal contact family and constraints. The constituent energy changes are and . Each feasible endpoint has its self-record; nonzero transfers occur when . No contact-equilibrium designation or relaxation law is assumed.
To check consistency with the separately scoped aggregate postulates, take and let sum their three coordinates. Adopt . On this nonempty admission set, , and all dimensioned coordinates add. Use the same aggregate formula on its scaled tags and all positive-coordinate scaling domains. Only the retained partition is in this aggregate admission set; there the product entropy and aggregate entropy both equal . All other retained partitions have separately adopted product entropy, so no aggregate entropy identity is asserted for them. Totals and entropy on these complete partitioned endpoints are additional declared maps allowed by Isolated compound and feasible equilibrium set. The maximum criterion of Stable equilibrium requires an attained global entropy maximum is used on their stated entropy sum; no aggregate-composition or accessibility theorem is claimed.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The equilibrium-coordinate convention of Equilibrium state domains, the contact restrictions of Thermal contact family and constraints, the feasible-set definition Isolated compound and feasible equilibrium set, and the entropy and equilibrium-maximum postulates.
Each adopted entropy is a finite scalar measured in (Concave macroscopic fundamental entropy).
On every specified convex region the entropy is continuous and satisfies the stated Jensen concavity inequality (Concave macroscopic fundamental entropy).
The admitted separated pairs form a designated subset (Additive separated systems and tagged bulk scaling).
Under the composition map, the dimensioned total energy of an admitted pair is (Additive separated systems and tagged bulk scaling).
Entropy is additive under the composition map on its admitted independent separated pairs; no aggregate entropy identity is inferred for unadmitted retained partitions (Concave macroscopic fundamental entropy).
For , the tagged bulk map is , and the entropy postulate assumes on that domain (Additive separated systems and tagged bulk scaling, Concave macroscopic fundamental entropy).
An equilibrium feasible set may be noncompact and need not contain an entropy maximizer (Isolated compound and feasible equilibrium set).
Stable equilibrium in this route requires an attained global maximum on the exact feasible set (Stable equilibrium requires an attained global entropy maximum).
The library's Cauchy-sequence reals form a complete ordered field (The Cauchy-sequence reals have the least-upper-bound property). Applying Every complete ordered field is Archimedean to this field, for every real there is a natural number with , where denotes its canonical real image.
The range of every nonempty finite list of real numbers has a greatest member (Every nonempty finite set of reals has a maximum and a minimum).
On , the Euclidean norm is defined by the sum of coordinate squares and induces the usual Euclidean metric (The Euclidean inner product on , Cauchy-Schwarz with its equality case, the triangle inequality for , the parallelogram law and polarisation).
A real number is the supremum of a set exactly when it is an upper bound of and for every upper bound of (Complete ordered field (least-upper-bound property)).
in dimensionless coordinates, with each full domain designated as an open single-phase chart; are fixed; total energy is ; the retained feasible set is and its separately adopted entropy is ; ; and , . For every , choose and , designate and in their own dimensionless coordinates, and set and on those domains.
The contact configuration sets, tagged family, endpoint maps, admitted core records, internal transfer map, and nonempty aggregate admission set and entropy are exactly those in the Example. Product total energy is and product total entropy is .
Compactness uses the inherited Euclidean topology: every cover of by relatively open subsets must have a finite subcover.
Verification
Given: The model [A1] and [A3], the compactness convention [A2], facts [F1]–[F8], and [L1]–[L4].
Each entropy in [A1] is finite, affine and continuous on the convex domain , hence concave; it is with and . The tagged scalings satisfy [F6]. On the equal-energy aggregate admission set in [A3], , so [F3]–[F5] hold there with the specified affine aggregate entropy, positive energy derivative and tagged scaling. The separately adopted product entropy gives for every retained partition. The supplied records have equilibrium endpoint configurations with the stated constituent and aggregate maps, belong to the core closed class, and have zero external transfers. Internal in joule magnitudes gives changes and in the constituents, preserving the total energy and all fixed volumes and amounts. Every feasible point has its self-record; permits nonzero internal heat transfer and increases product entropy by . Thus the stated endpoint and contact model is consistent without assigning varying partition entropy to one aggregate coordinate tuple.
For each integer , put . It is relatively open: if , then , and any with has coordinate difference . By [L3], , so and . Given any , [L1] applied to gives an integer ; then and , so the cover . For any nonempty finite subfamily with indices , [L2] gives a greatest index , and its union is . The feasible state belongs to but not , so this cover has no finite subcover. By [A2] and [F7], is noncompact and has no assumed attainment guarantee.
For every , the entropy value is because . Thus is an upper bound of the feasible entropy values.
Given any entropy tolerance in , apply [L1] to to choose with . Then and Hence feasible entropy values lie arbitrarily close to from below.
Let be any upper bound of the feasible entropy values. If , set and apply [L1] to to choose with . Then and , contradicting that is an upper bound. Therefore for every upper bound . By [L4], .
For every , also lies in and satisfies . Hence because . No feasible state maximizes entropy; the supremum is not attained because is excluded.
By [F8] stable equilibrium in this route requires an attained global maximum on the exact feasible set. Since no maximum is attained, this model has no stable equilibrium under that criterion.
A local entropy maximum below a feasible global maximum
An abstract two-system model with positive thermodynamic coordinates and a model-declared nonconvex energy-partition constraint; it illustrates global versus local maxima without a material-specific kinetic or empirical claim.
Example
Take two independent separated one-species systems and with material constitutions inside an isolated compound. Write and for their equilibrium domains; each is in , and each full domain is designated as an open single-phase chart. Fix positive , total energy , , and toy entropies , , using the same formulas on the distinct tagged constitutions and for every . Adopt the partitioned endpoint entropy as additional model data and permit internal thermal energy transfer at fixed volumes and amounts by the explicit records below. This product entropy is not identified with a simple aggregate entropy after discarding the energy partition. Let
The retained barrier constraint admits exactly this nonconvex subset of the energy partitions; all its pairs satisfy the same total energy, volume, and amount constraints. The additive entropy is , so is a local maximum relative to but lies below the feasible global maximum at . These toy constitutive laws and constraints make no claim about a real material; calling an actual preparation metastable would require a separate kinetic model.
The retained partitions in have and are outside this aggregate admission set, so their separately adopted product entropy does not contradict the aggregate identity.

An equilibrium feasible set is a model-declared subset satisfying the stated totals and retained constraints; the definition imposes no convexity on it (Isolated compound and feasible equilibrium set).
Stable equilibrium in this route is an attained global entropy maximum on the exact feasible set (Stable equilibrium requires an attained global entropy maximum).

The contact configuration sets, endpoint maps, admitted records, internal transfer map, and nonempty aggregate admission set and entropy are exactly those specified in the Example. The product total energy is and the product total entropy is , independently of aggregate composition.
A local maximum relative to means a feasible point whose entropy is at least that of every feasible point in some relatively open neighborhood in the inherited Euclidean topology.
Verification
Given: The model [A1] and [A3], the relative-local-maximum convention [A2], and facts [F1]–[F8] and [L1].
The two entropies in [A1] are finite, affine, continuous and concave on their convex domains; they are with positive energy derivatives and . Their tagged scalings obey [F6]. On the aggregate admission set in [A3], equal constituent energies give , so [F3]–[F5] hold there; the aggregate entropy is also affine with positive energy derivative and the stated tagged scaling. For the retained product endpoints, the separately adopted sum in [A1] is affine and concave on the product domain and gives , strictly increasing since .
For each admitted in [A3], the declared curve has its two endpoints in , and the maps retrieve and while gives the aggregate endpoints of that same record. External transfers and excluded endpoint energy changes are zero, and gives the product energy balance. Internal matches the increase of 's energy in joule magnitudes; volumes and amounts remain fixed and no contact work occurs. Thus the admitted records witness the stated contact permissions and complete feasible endpoints. The entropy change is . This checks only the stipulated endpoint model, not any material dynamics.
Let . It is relatively open: for any represented choose ; if , then and [L1] gives . Thus , hence . Every represented in satisfies ; the definition of then forces . Since is increasing by step 1.1, no feasible point in has entropy greater than . Thus is a local maximum in the sense of [A2], while [F7] permits the stated nonconvex feasible constraint.
The feasible state has entropy exceeding that of by . Because is increasing and is the largest feasible , is the global maximum on . Hence is not a global maximum and cannot be classified as stable equilibrium under [F8].
