How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Spatiality and curve identity of the acceleration, the divergence form of the expansion, and the along-congruence derivative
Statement
Let be a time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold with metric-selected connection , let be a nonempty open subset and let be a smooth observer congruence on , with acceleration , expansion and along-congruence derivative as in Acceleration, expansion and the along-congruence derivative of an observer congruence. Then:
(a) The acceleration is spatial. is smooth and
that is, ; equivalently for the projection field of Observers, rest spaces and the spatial projection at an event clause (c), namely for .
(b) Acceleration of the observer curves. Let be an observer curve of the congruence, that is, an integral curve of (Observer congruences, their observer curves and adapted charts clause (b)), and let denote the covariant derivative along (Covariant derivative along a curve). Then
Consequently every observer curve is a geodesic in its flow parameter if and only if on (Geodesic of an affine connection).
(c) Divergence form of the expansion. In every smooth chart of , with the metric components and ,
and with . In particular is smooth.
(d) Derivation property. For smooth functions , , and annihilates constants.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold , the open subset , the smooth observer congruence on , and the fields , , of Acceleration, expansion and the along-congruence derivative of an observer congruence.
is torsion-free and -compatible: for all smooth vector fields on , (Metric compatibility, torsion freedom and the metric-selected connection class clause (a), Existence and uniqueness of the metric-selected connection of a nondegenerate metric, and its extension to tensor fields).
is a smooth vector field for smooth , so is smooth on ; is additive and -linear in , and additive in (Affine connection on a smooth manifold).
For an integral curve of , is the pullback of the supplied smooth field . The pullback connection defining the curve derivative gives (Covariant derivative along a curve, Geodesic of an affine connection, Observer congruences, their observer curves and adapted charts).
In every smooth chart of , for every smooth vector field on , with , and the chart formula represents the chart-independent scalar (The derivative of the metric density and the chart formula for the divergence of a vector field clause (c), Christoffel symbols of an affine connection).
Define by (Observers, rest spaces and the spatial projection at an event clause (c)). This projection field satisfies for and annihilates multiples of (The observer rest-space decomposition and the spatial projection, Observers, rest spaces and the spatial projection at an event).
For smooth functions on , the induced tensor derivative has , so is the action of the smooth vector field as a derivation on functions (Existence and uniqueness of the metric-selected connection of a nondegenerate metric, and its extension to tensor fields clause (c), A smooth vector field is a smooth section of the tangent bundle).
Proof
(Spatiality of .) By [L2], is a smooth vector field on . For any smooth vector field on , [L1] gives ; by [L4] the left-hand side is , so for every . Taking gives at every ; hence and by [L6]. This proves (a).
(Acceleration of the observer curves.) Let be an integral curve of ; then , and [L3] gives for every . If on , then , so each observer curve is a geodesic in its parameter (Geodesic of an affine connection); conversely, if every observer curve satisfies , then for every and every observer curve, and since every point of lies on an observer curve (Observer congruences, their observer curves and adapted charts clause (b)), on . This proves (b).
(Divergence form.) Applying [L5] to gives ; in particular is smooth on , since the right-hand side is smooth. The trace identities follow from and , the last by [L1] and [L4]: . This proves (c).
(Derivation property.) For smooth , [L7] gives as a derivation on functions, so ; for a constant function one has , so . This proves (d).
Remarks
-
Dependence on the congruence only through and . The acceleration and expansion are computed from and the metric-selected connection alone; no adapted chart, tetrad or foliation is required, and no global existence statement for such structures is used.
-
Choice convention. The smooth structure of the tangent bundle underlying assumes through Observer congruences, their observer curves and adapted charts; no other choice principle is used here.
