How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Dominant energy inequality for the real scalar test tensor
A pointwise algebraic inequality for the mathematical test-scalar tensor on a Lorentzian tangent space; it does not assert that the tensor is coupled matter.
Statement
Assume . At a point of a time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifold, let be a future-directed unit timelike vector, let be future causal, and let be a smooth real scalar. Put , , , and , where is the spatial projection relative to . Then

Facts & Assumptions
Given: A time-oriented Lorentzian tangent space of signature , a future unit timelike vector , a future causal vector , and .
Observers, rest spaces and the spatial projection at an event: , is the rest space, and .
The observer rest-space decomposition and the spatial projection: is positive definite and is the orthogonal projection onto it.
Timelike, null, spacelike and causal vectors of a Lorentz vector space: causal vectors are nonzero and satisfy . By Classification of future and past causal vectors by a timelike field, future timelike vectors form the connected component containing , and future causal vectors are exactly . In particular and .
Cauchy–Schwarz: , with equality exactly for linearly dependent vectors: in the positive-definite real inner product space , .
is the only choice principle assumed in the smooth tangent-bundle conventions used by [F2] and [F3] (The Axiom of Countable Choice ()).
Proof
Set and . Then , so and by [F2]–[F3]. It follows that . Substitution into [F1], using , gives .
Let and . The continuous linear function never vanishes on the timelike component : a timelike vector in would contradict its positive definiteness in [F3]. Since is connected and contains , where this function is , it is negative throughout . Continuity makes it nonpositive on its closure, so [F4] gives . By [F2], . Since , one has .
By [F1] and step 1.1, .
Apply [F5] and from step 1.2: . If , step 1.2 gives and hence , for which as well. This proves the causal flux inequality, including the null case.
