How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
In a globally hyperbolic manifold the causal relation is closed and truncated causal cones over compact sets are compact
Statement
Assume the Axioms of Countable Choice and Dependent Choice (The Axiom of Countable Choice (), The axiom of dependent choice: a relation in which every element is related to something admits an -indexed chain). Let be a time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold that is globally hyperbolic in the sense of Chronology, causality, strong causality, global hyperbolicity and time functions clause (c): strongly causal and with compact causal diamonds for all . Let be the auxiliary metric of The auxiliary Riemannian metric h=g+2n-flat tensor n-flat is complete after a proper-exhaustion conformal factor, and its closed bounded sets are compact and let , be the relations of Causal curves, chronological and causal reachability, and inextendibility. Then:
(a) the causal relation is closed: if for all and , , then ; consequently and are closed for every , and so are and for every compact ;
(b) for all compact the set is compact.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A globally hyperbolic time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold , its auxiliary metric , the relations , , and a sequence with , .
Global hyperbolicity means strong causality together with compactness of all causal diamonds ; the sets are open; is reflexive and transitive and contained in its own graph (Chronology, causality, strong causality, global hyperbolicity and time functions clause (c), Openness of the chronological future and past, openness of the chronological relation, and closure of future and past sets clause (a), Chart independence, concatenation, reparametrization and transitivity for causal curves clause (f)).
Here denotes the complete conformal metric of The auxiliary Riemannian metric h=g+2n-flat tensor n-flat is complete after a proper-exhaustion conformal factor, and its closed bounded sets are compact clauses (b)-(d). Strong causality bounds the auxiliary length of causal curves in a compact set: for every compact there is with for every future causal curve with image in (Strong causality bounds the auxiliary length of causal curves contained in a compact set, The auxiliary Riemannian metric h=g+2n-flat tensor n-flat is complete after a proper-exhaustion conformal factor, and its closed bounded sets are compact).
Every finite future causal curve can be reparametrized by -arclength, as proved in Step 1.2 of Basic limit curve lemma: arclength-parametrized causal curves have causal limit curves on compact parameter intervals and future-inextendible limits on half-lines. The two-endpoint limit curve theorem then applies to future causal curves with , and finite: if the common-domain reparametrizations converge along a subsequence uniformly on to a future causal limit curve from to ; if then (Two-endpoint limit curve theorem: bounded lengths give joining limits, unbounded lengths give two inextendible tails with the closure relation clause (i)).
Through every point there are past and future timelike geodesic segments: for each and every sufficiently small the points and are defined, and because along a geodesic the causal character and time orientation of the tangent are constant and a geodesic with future (respectively past) timelike tangent is a future (respectively past) timelike curve; the reversed segment is again a timelike curve (Observers, rest spaces and the spatial projection at an event, The geodesic initial-value problem and the exponential map of the metric-selected connection clauses (a) and (d), Covariant differentiation along curves: metric pairing, parallel transport and geodesic speed clause 3, Causal curves, chronological and causal reachability, and inextendibility clause (b)).
A closed subset of a compact topological space is compact (A closed subspace of a compact space is compact, and a finite union of compact subspaces is compact). Every family of ambient open sets covering a compact subset has a finite subfamily covering it (A subspace is compact exactly when every family of open subsets of the ambient space covering it, indexed or not, has finitely many members covering it clauses 1 and 2). A finite union of compact subsets is compact: apply that criterion to each subset and combine the finitely many finite subcovers, then apply its converse. Empty subsets use the empty subcover (Open cover, subcover, and compact topological space; a compact subset is a subspace that is compact in its own right).
Proof
(Compact enclosure of the joining curves.) If for all in an infinite set, then passing to that subsequence and using uniqueness of limits gives , so by reflexivity; the claim is then proved. Hence, passing to a subsequence, we may assume for all , and choose a future causal curve with , for each . Choose so small that and are defined; by [L4], and . Since and are open and contain , respectively [L1], there is with and for . Fix such a . For every point of the image of one has , so and by transitivity [L1]; hence and is compact by [L1].
(Bounded reparametrizations.) Let be reparametrized by -arclength, so , and . By step 1.1 and [L2], for all ; in particular the sequence is bounded and has a convergent subsequence, with limit .
(Closedness.) Passing to a subsequence, . If , clause (i) of [L3] gives a future causal curve with and , so . If , clause (i) gives , so again . This proves the closedness of .
(Closedness of the cones.) Let with for a compact : choose with . Passing to a subsequence, because is compact, so step 3.1 applied to gives , that is, ; hence is closed. The same argument with the order reversed shows that is closed, and with this gives closedness of .
(Compact truncated cones.) Let be compact. If either compact set is empty, the intersection is empty and compact. Otherwise form the family of all with and every positive for which the past timelike segment of [L4] is defined. This family covers by [L4], with no simultaneous selection of parameters. The ambient-cover criterion [L5] gives a finite subcover; finite choice names its representing pairs and puts . If , choose with and with ; then , so . Hence . Likewise form the entire family of admissible future segments for , and use [L5] to take a finite subcover by sets with and . Therefore a finite union of compact causal diamonds, hence compact by [L5]; and is closed by step 4.1. A closed subset of a compact set is compact [L5], so is compact.
Remarks
-
Where each hypothesis is used. Strong causality enters only through the length bound [L2], which rules out the unbounded-length alternative of the limit curve theorem; compactness of the diamonds is used in steps 1.1 and 5.1. The proof establishes that global hyperbolicity implies closedness of the causal relation and compactness of the truncated cones. A converse requires an additional causality hypothesis; closedness and compact truncated cones alone allow closed timelike curves.

Use. Closedness of is used in Continuity and strict monotonicity of the chronological volume functions in a globally hyperbolic manifold to obtain almost-everywhere convergence of the indicators of from the openness of chronology, and compactness of is used in Truncated causal cones J^+(K) cap J^-(S_b) over compact sets and Cauchy levels are compact and Cone bumps: for every point of a Cauchy level there is a smooth bump with past timelike gradient on its positive region below that level.
