How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Chart independence of the metric volume form, its value on orthonormal frames, and the unit normal and density of a non-null hyperplane
Statement
Let be a time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold (Smooth time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifolds: the geometric objects of the model) whose underlying manifold carries an orientation (Oriented smooth manifolds and oriented charts), and let and the local forms be as in The metric volume form, current flux through 3-faces and finite-chain charges clause (a).
(a) Chart independence. Let and be oriented charts with on the overlap of their domains, where is the smooth transition map; write and for the metric components in the two charts and , . Then
and the local forms agree on the overlap,
Consequently there is a unique smooth nowhere-vanishing -form on — the metric volume form — whose restriction to the domain of every oriented chart is ; it is a smooth section with nowhere-zero values and positive on the given orientation.
(b) Value on orthonormal frames. For every and every positively oriented ordered basis of with ,
(c) Non-null hyperplanes: normal and density. Let , let be a -dimensional subspace that is nondegenerate for , and let be an ordered basis of . Then is one-dimensional and nondegenerate and . Let and write , so that . If is the sign for which is a positively oriented basis of , then is the unit normal to adapted to the ordered basis ; it satisfies , for every , and it is the unique vector with these two properties for which is positively oriented. Moreover
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold with an orientation, oriented charts , with transition , a point , a three-dimensional nondegenerate subspace with ordered basis , and the objects , of The metric volume form, current flux through 3-faces and finite-chain charges clause (a).
For square matrices of one size, and ; the determinant of is (For same-sized finite square matrices over a commutative ring, , For , the determinant over a commutative ring by the Leibniz formula, and for a real matrix).
Pullback of forms is functorial and commutes with the wedge product; in coordinates, for a smooth map of open subsets of , by the coordinate expression of pullback and of the wedge product (The pullback of a differential form, The wedge product of differential forms, Local coordinate expression for a differential form). Oriented charts of an oriented manifold have orientation-preserving transitions, so (Oriented smooth manifolds and oriented charts).
At every point there is a -orthonormal ordered basis with ; exchanging two of its spacelike vectors preserves orthonormality and the position of the negative entry and reverses its orientation, so such a basis may be chosen positively oriented (Every Lorentz form admits an ordered basis with matrix diag(-1,1,1,1), Smooth time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifolds: the geometric objects of the model, Alternating -linear maps).
is the -orthogonal complement of eta-orthogonality and orthogonal complements in a Lorentz vector space: is a linear subspace, , and .
Choose a basis of and extend it to a basis of the four-dimensional space . Any extends to a functional by assigning, for example, . In this basis the matrix of is invertible because is nondegenerate; hence the linear map , , is represented by an invertible matrix and is bijective. Thus for a unique (Smooth time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifolds: the geometric objects of the model clause (a)); this proves the extension-and-representation fact used below by finite-dimensional basis extension and an invertible matrix.
Proof
(Determinant transformation.) On the overlap, [L1] reads in matrix form. By [L2], . Since by [L3] and by definition, taking square roots gives .
(The orthogonal complement is one-dimensional.) Let be . Then . For each , [L6] constructs an extension and the invertible matrix of gives a unique with ; hence and is surjective. Rank-nullity gives . Applying the same basis-extension and nondegenerate-matrix argument to the one-dimensional space shows .
(Coordinate computation.) Choose a positively oriented -orthonormal basis with as in [L4] and write vectors as their coordinate columns. Let be the coordinate column of and let be the coordinate columns of . Since , the matrix satisfies for , and . Let be the matrix with columns and the matrix with columns . Then
(Agreement of local forms.) By [L3], . Multiplying by and substituting step 1.1 gives , the displayed identity. In particular the two local forms have the same value at every point of the overlap under the identification by .
(Nondegeneracy and double complement.) If , then for every , and nondegeneracy of the restriction of to forces . Hence , the sum is direct by dimension, and the restriction of to is nondegenerate: if satisfies for all , then vanishes on and on and hence on , so . Finally by [L5] and both have dimension by steps 1.2 and the definition of , so .
( is invertible and a block identity.) The columns of form a basis of : the are linearly independent because has dimension , and since is -orthogonal to that span while . Hence , and is invertible because is nondegenerate. Taking determinants in step 1.3 with [L2] and expanding the block determinant in the first coordinate gives and , so . Therefore .
(Gluing.) Each local form is smooth and nowhere vanishing on its chart domain because are smooth and is a nowhere-vanishing smooth -form. By step 2.1 the local forms agree on every overlap, so they define a unique smooth section of with the stated local expressions; the transition identity also shows that evaluates positively on the positively oriented frames of the orientation at every point.
(Existence and uniqueness of the adapted normal.) Let span , put ; then , a value depending only on because replacing by a nonzero multiple does not change it. Choose so that is positively oriented; such a sign exists and is unique because the two choices give opposite orientations and the orientation is a choice of one of the two rays of . Uniqueness of as a vector with , and positively oriented is immediate: any such vector is a nonzero multiple of , the last condition fixes its sign, and the unit condition fixes its modulus.
(Value on orthonormal frames.) Fix and a positively oriented -orthonormal basis as in [L4], take an oriented chart at , and let be the matrix whose columns are the coordinate components of the in the chart basis. Orthonormality is with , so [L2] gives , that is, . Positivity of the orientation of and of the chart gives , hence . By the local expression of step 3.1 and the defining property of wedge products, .
(Value of the volume form.) By step 4.1 applied to the basis , the coordinate expression of from step 3.1 gives , the determinant of the coordinate matrix of the four vectors. By construction of in step 3.2 the tuple is positively oriented, so ; by step 2.3, . This is the displayed formula and completes the proof.
Remarks
-
Orientation versus time orientation. The construction uses the orientation of only; the time orientation enters neither nor the sign of the unit normal. Replacing the orientation by its opposite replaces by and by , leaving unchanged up to the corresponding sign convention on chains.
-
Null hyperplanes. A three-dimensional subspace on which is degenerate has ; it has no unit normal and the density identity above fails, which is why null faces require the three-form itself (The metric volume form, current flux through 3-faces and finite-chain charges clause (c)).
