How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Finite Naimark compression: a finite POVM as a compression of a PVM
Statement
Assume the Axiom of Countable Choice and the Axiom of Choice (The Axiom of Countable Choice (), The Axiom of Choice). Let be a nonzero complex Hilbert space (Hilbert space) and a finite POVM on : a finite family of bounded self-adjoint operators with (Finite effects and instruments: normalization and non-determination of the update). Let with standard orthonormal basis and form (Hilbert tensor construction: inner product, completion and product bases). Then
is a linear isometry, the operators are orthogonal projections with (a finite PVM on , The Hilbert orthogonal projection onto a closed subspace), and
The square roots are the positive square roots supplied by the bounded functional calculus. The construction asserts no physical realization of the ancilla.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: ; a finite POVM ; the ancilla with orthonormal basis .
; for the bounded self-adjoint the continuous functional calculus provides a unique isometric unital star-homomorphism ; in particular is bounded, self-adjoint, positive, satisfies and commutes with (Continuous functional calculus for bounded self adjoint operators, Borel functional calculus for a bounded normal operator, Finite effects and instruments: normalization and non-determination of the update).
The completed tensor product has the inner product , the elementary tensors span a dense subspace, and bounded operators extend as with adjoint (Hilbert tensor construction: inner product, completion and product bases, Bounded tensor maps: extension, norm estimate, adjoint and commutation).
is the orthogonal projection of onto ; and (Finite effects and instruments: normalization and non-determination of the update, The Hilbert orthogonal projection onto a closed subspace, Hilbert projections are linear, self-adjoint and contractive).
Proof
[The isometry] The map is well defined and linear; for finite sums of elementary tensors the inner product is computed by [F2], and for , by [F1] and [F3]. Hence is an isometry.
[The projections] The operators are orthogonal projections by [F2] and [F3]; distinct ones are orthogonal and by [F3].
[Compression] Compute the adjoint directly: for , vectors and scalars , by [F2] and [F1], so ; in particular . Then and by [F1].
