Wilsonian F-Term Nonrenormalization
Formal perturbative Wilsonian deductions for rigid four-dimensional N=1 gauge theories with a symmetry-preserving regulator, at nonzero Wilsonian scale and in the topologically trivial sector. The result makes no nonperturbative, arbitrary 1PI, continuum-existence, or empirical claim.
Statement
Let a local rigid four-dimensional superspace action datum use the canonical matter kinetic term , an additional real D-term integrand whose integrated action is gauge invariant under the stated boundary conditions, a holomorphic gauge-invariant derivative-free F-term integrand , and the physical superspace and action-bracket conventions of Local Wilsonian Superspace Action Data. Its global gauge group is a compact closed matrix subgroup with inherited embedded Lie-group structure; has the matrix commutator, and each finite-dimensional unitary matter representation is smooth with differential . Assume its formal Wilsonian cutoff prescription has scale , a local nondynamical-spurion extension, and the coefficientwise formal local background-jet convention stated in that action-data definition: independent real coefficient spurions are unconstrained, their first anti-chiral jets are independent, and chirality holds before evaluating constant backgrounds. For the FI branch, separate bare constant FI terms from and hold their coefficients fixed as real numbers; promote only the other real D coefficients to unconstrained backgrounds. This is the constant-FI exception specified by the action-data definition's background-promotion rule: an unconstrained coefficient multiplying an Abelian prepotential is not gauge invariant. No convergence or analyticity in those real coefficients is assumed. Use the linear Lorenz BRST component graph completion specified in that action-data definition, including its nonminimal ghost/multiplier fields, nondegenerate invariant kinetic form, fixed infrared inverse and zero-mode prescription, and homogeneous gauge/ghost kernels. Rigid-supersymmetry and spurion Ward compatibility of this particular component prescription are required rather than inferred from classical gauge fixing. Coefficients below are in its fixed component/source coordinates; no equality of arbitrary gauge-fixed off-shell representatives or gauge-transport theorem is asserted. Also assume the prescription supplies a cutoff vertex functional whose contributing graphs are one-particle-irreducible (cutting one internal propagator does not disconnect a graph) and a local derivative expansion with finitely many derivatives at each formal order for external momenta , around the topologically trivial background. Let be the normalized coefficientwise expectation of the selected regulated formal expansion. Assume its rigid and BRST changes of variables obey and for every local insertion , with counterterms satisfying the same identities and no local gauge anomaly. In the chiral density, collect every quadratic gauge-invariant polynomial in whose coefficients are independent of the dynamical matter superfields —including terms initially written in , such as off-diagonal Abelian kinetic mixing—into , where and each is symmetric complex-bilinear with for all and ; form a basis of this invariant-form space, and in the chosen matrix representation. Each is dimensionless. Let be the remaining holomorphic integrand. At constant coefficient backgrounds set and fix the representative at every scale by ; numerical constants have zero F-action, so this is a density convention rather than a dynamical restriction. Pure background terms before constant-background evaluation are kept separate from dynamical-field vertices. For a simple factor includes the term in the action-data definition. Then coefficientwise, while the gauge-kinetic coefficient vector may receive one-loop corrections but no higher-loop corrections. For the FI conclusion, also require that at zero mass and interaction spurions the regulated free matter propagator and its one-vector insertion have the same momentum kernel on every matter component, tensored with its representation identity, with no species-dependent cutoff weights apart from the charge matrix; counterterms follow the selected graph prescription with ultraviolet matching and no independent finite FI shifts. If an unbroken U(1) factor is present under these additional conditions, a Fayet–Iliopoulos parameter can receive a correction only at one loop, and that correction is proportional to the sum of the U(1) charges of all left-chiral multiplets, including multiplicities; it vanishes when this charge sum is zero. The theorem imposes no nonrenormalization condition on the additional real D-term integrand , the Kähler data, or coefficients expressed after a scale-dependent chiral-field rescaling that normalizes a positive real quadratic kinetic form. It is only a formal perturbative Wilsonian statement at nonzero cutoff: it does not assert nonperturbative exactness, a result for an arbitrary one-particle-irreducible functional, or existence of a continuum interacting quantum field theory.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: A local rigid action datum, a formal high-mode split at , and the perturbative, locality, symmetry-preservation, and anomaly-free hypotheses in the statement.
Local Wilsonian Superspace Action Data: the bare density contains the canonical matter kinetic term , an additional real whose integrated D-term is gauge invariant under the stated boundary conditions, and the chiral term . Subject to the explicit constant-FI exception in [A3], the selected spurion prescription uses the formal local background-jet algebra with independent first anti-chiral jets of unconstrained real coefficient spurions, and chirality before constant-background evaluation; it separately assumes the local derivative expansion and one-particle-irreducible vertex property.
Finite-Jet Non-Abelian BRST Complex: the component gauge/ghost convention is , , and , extended as an odd derivation to finite jets.
Nilpotence of the Finite-Jet Non-Abelian BRST Differential: for the stated finite-dimensional Lie algebra and representation data, the declared BRST differential satisfies on the finite-jet algebra.
Four-dimensional chiral superfield on flat superspace: the supersymmetry generators are and ; for external odd parameters, .
The in the Statement and [A2] is the induced Wess–Zumino component variation explicitly constructed in [F1]: apply the raw supercharges in [F4], compensate with for , and use the stated fixed physical coefficient extraction. It is extended by zero on the nonminimal ghost/multiplier coordinates. includes gauge fixing and ghosts, so its nonzero variation is retained in the Ward equation.
Local Wilsonian Superspace Action Data: for scalar values in an open and smooth real , the complex Hessian and its closed real -form are real D-term data. Where the Hessian is positive definite they define a Kähler metric; if nondegenerate but indefinite they define pseudo-Kähler data. Neither belongs to the holomorphic F-term.
The perturbative expansion is formal and coefficientwise about the topologically trivial sector; no instanton or other nonperturbative contribution is included. In a local trivialization, write the connection one-form as and define its curvature by , where, for tangent vectors , . For every selected invariant form , the topological-angle density is treated as a total derivative under the stated boundary convention.
At every perturbative order the regulated gauge-invariant local counterterm sector lies in the declared superspace action class and preserve the rigid supersymmetry and BRST/gauge Ward identities. Explicitly, for the normalized coefficientwise expectation, and for every local insertion . The selected quantum measure has no local gauge anomaly.
Each independent coefficient of and is extended to a nondynamical chiral superfield, and each real coefficient of the part of other than bare constant FI terms to an unconstrained nondynamical real superfield. Bare FI parameters remain fixed real numbers: multiplying by an unconstrained real background would violate gauge invariance. This is the FI exception to the general background-promotion rule in [F1]. The local counterterms and their Ward identities hold in the coefficientwise formal local background-jet algebra before evaluation at constant scalar components. For the finite set entering a fixed coefficient, the derivative-free sector is a formal power series in over the remaining chiral coefficient algebra, and the are independent odd jets over that sector. Formal derivatives and the graded chain rule act coefficientwise. Contributions containing background superderivatives are assigned to the D-sector after chiral projection as in [F1]. No integrated field is rescaled and no quantum Jacobian is inferred.
For each U(1) qualification, the perturbative background leaves that factor unbroken. The FI parameter means the field-independent coefficient of . A real linear superfield is a real satisfying ; a field-dependent coupling is separate D-term data and is not this FI coefficient. The charge sum includes every left-chiral multiplet with its representation multiplicity. After setting all mass and interaction spurions to zero, the regulated free matter propagator and the regulator's one-vector insertion use the same momentum kernel on every matter component, tensored with the identity on its representation space. Apart from the charge matrix, there are no species-dependent cutoff weights. Counterterms follow the selected graph prescription with ultraviolet matching; no independent finite FI shifts are appended.
At constant coefficient backgrounds put , a numerical coefficient of mass dimension three. Choose the representative of the local chiral density at every scale by . Pure background terms before constant-background evaluation are kept separate from dynamical-field vertices. This convention fixes a null term of the rigid action, since for every numerical constant ; it is not a Ward-identity consequence.
Use the linear Lorenz component completion in [F1], with , , its gauge fermion, its fixed infrared inverse domain and no integrated residual gauge zero modes. Under uniform gauge-kinetic scaling, , and the regulator preserves the stated propagator and vertex homogeneities. No additional supergauge or regulator interaction variables are integrated. Local counterterms obey [A2] and [A3]; counterterm insertions denote their underlying perturbative graphs, rather than extra independent interaction vertices.
Proof
By [F1], [F4], and [A2], the local Wilsonian density at every perturbative order has the same superspace and gauge-invariant decomposition into the fixed canonical matter kinetic term, an additional real D-term, a chiral F-term, and matter-independent quadratic gauge-kinetic terms. The collection of the latter terms into is the algebraic separation specified in the Statement and changes no field variable or action. For a numerical constant , the coefficient-extraction definition of the F bracket in [F1] gives . Thus the action determines no numerical constant coefficient in ; [A5] fixes that coefficient to its ultraviolet value. In the remaining proof apply the vertex argument to , which has positive dynamical-field degree. The BRST differential used to state gauge invariance is well-defined and nilpotent by [F2] and [F3]; this is a premise about the local gauge algebra, not a proof of quantum anomaly cancellation.
Work in the formal background-jet algebra of [F1] and [A3], before setting backgrounds constant. For a derivative-free chiral coefficient write , where each belongs to the remaining chiral coefficient algebra, so . The graded chain rule gives . Independence of these first odd background jets forces for every , coefficientwise. Indeed the coefficient of in this derivative is whenever . The coefficient algebra is over , hence multiplication by the nonzero integer is invertible, and for every nonzero multi-index . Thus and the real D coefficients do not enter the derivative-free chiral integrand at any formal order. The same chain-rule argument with the independent first anti-chiral jets of the conjugate chiral coefficient backgrounds excludes dependence on those conjugates, so the surviving coefficients are holomorphic in the chiral coefficient backgrounds. Terms containing background superderivatives belong to the D-sector by [F1]; the matter-independent quadratic gauge chiral terms retain their topological-angle total-derivative qualification in [A1]. This argument requires neither a positive-body factorization nor an analytic extension of formal series, and makes no change of integrated field variables.
Assign the bookkeeping R charges , , , and to a coefficient multiplying a term with field-strength superfields; then and the chiral density has total R charge two. To apply the topological-angle shifts, first use a real basis of the real-valued invariant symmetric bilinear forms on . Such a basis complexifies to a basis of the space in the Statement: the real and imaginary parts of any invariant complex form restricted to are real invariant forms, because preserves . Finite-dimensional basis extraction adds no choice principle. Write with an invertible complex matrix , and put ; this changes only coefficient coordinates. Real shifts of change only topological-angle terms, which integrate to zero under [A1]. Consequently the change of a quadratic chiral coefficient in this real basis under such a shift is real. Its holomorphic derivative with respect to each is real-valued, hence constant: writing it as , the Cauchy–Riemann equations and make both real derivatives of vanish. Applying the same argument to every other complex scalar coupling makes these derivative coefficients constant in those couplings as well; the argument applies coefficientwise in the formal coupling expansion. A coefficient of any nonconstant nonkinetic chiral operator is unchanged by every real shift, and holomorphy therefore makes it independent of . Transforming back gives , where is independent of every . The uniform scaling used below commutes with this fixed linear basis change.
The nonminimal BRST extension is nilpotent: its square on is zero directly and on the original variables it is zero by [F3]. The odd Leibniz rule gives . Completing the multiplier square as in [F1] gives the quadratic term and a field-independent Gaussian normalization. Hence this completion adds no interacting multiplier vertices: besides quadratic kernels it adds only , whose vector end is an ordinary gauge-boson end, never a gaugino end. Uniform scaling makes each such vertex proportional to and every internal ghost or vector-multiplet propagator proportional to . The ghosts have R charge zero, so they add no R-charged coupling. By step 2.1 the additional non-FI real D coefficients and conjugate F coefficients cannot affect the derivative-free chiral sector, so graphs containing those interactions can be omitted there. A fixed bare FI insertion has only one vector-multiplet end; if attached to another vertex its internal line is a bridge, excluded by 1PI. Thus the remaining interactions are precisely the physical A, B, C types below and these explicit ghost vertices. This establishes exhaustiveness for this selected component completion without using gauge independence.
Consider a connected graph contributing to this chiral density, with external left-handed gaugino lines and internal vector lines. Uniformly scale the complete gauge-kinetic coefficient vector by a formal parameter , , holding its coefficient ratios fixed. Each internal vector propagator then contributes . Let count pure-gauge vertices from the quadratic gauge-kinetic polynomial with vector lines; let count vertices from a remaining F-term containing field strengths and vector lines; and let count vertices from the fixed canonical matter kinetic term with two chiral lines and vector lines. Let count ghost vertices and internal ghost propagators. There are no external ghosts in the chiral density, so . Each and ghost vertex contributes one factor of , and the vector-line ends satisfy . The R-charge condition gives . Thus ; eliminating and yields .
Every coefficient inside the square brackets is a positive integer. A graph contributing to the -independent part must have , so the bracket equals two. The bracket-two possibilities containing ghosts are alone, or with one or one . In the first case the R-charge equation requires , but both vector ends are gauge-boson ends of ghost vertices and cannot be external left-handed gauginos. In either mixed case the single ghost vertex contracts its own ghost ends. Its unique vector end must connect to the other vertex because it cannot be an external gaugino; that connecting line is a bridge, violating 1PI. Thus none contributes to this chiral coefficient, leaving . The remaining positive-integer solutions are two cubic or one quartic pure-gauge vertices, one vertex with , two vertices, one vertex, or the mixed case with one cubic gauge vertex and one vertex. For the case, [step 5.1]'s R-charge equation gives ; the vector-end equation then gives . It is an original single tree insertion in . In the pure-gauge case the R-charge equation gives and the vector-end equation is , so and . In the case it is , so and . Both are one-particle-irreducible one-loop corrections to the matter-independent quadratic gauge-kinetic polynomial. For either matter-only case, the R-charge equation gives and the vector-end equation gives , so . Each vertex contains one chiral and one antichiral matter line. A contribution to a holomorphic F-term cannot have an external antichiral line; with no other vertex type present, the two vertices therefore contract their two antichiral ends with their two chiral ends, giving , while the one vertex contracts its own chiral/antichiral pair, giving . Thus in each case the total internal-line count equals the vertex count and ; no matter line is external, so these graphs correct only the matter-independent quadratic gauge-kinetic polynomial, including any allowed Abelian mixing term. In the mixed case the end equation is , so ; the single vertex contracts its chiral/antichiral pair, giving . Hence , , and . Its sole vector line is a bridge separating the gauge vertex from the matter vertex, so it is one-particle-reducible and excluded by the vertex convention in [F1]. Therefore every non-tree contribution to is a one-loop shift of the matter-independent quadratic gauge-kinetic coefficient vector; no nonkinetic term in receives a radiative correction. A contribution linear in would require , hence a zero bracket and no interaction vertices; it is absent. This proves equality for every positive-field-degree coefficient of and ; their constant coefficients agree by [A5]. Thus in the specified representatives, and there are no higher-loop gauge-kinetic corrections.
For an unbroken U(1) factor, the prepotential shifts by . A constant coefficient multiplying is gauge invariant because the Berezin integral of the chiral and anti-chiral shifts vanishes under the boundary condition in [F1]. For a prospective field-independent correction with real coefficient superfield , the physical variation contains and its Hermitian conjugate, where at fixed chiral coordinates is the normalized D-to-F projector in [F1]. Since compactly supported chiral is arbitrary, its chiral pairing and the conjugate pairing vanish for all tests only if . Write the derivative-free real coefficient as a formal function of the real coefficient spurions and the chiral/anti-chiral coefficient spurions . In , the coefficients of the independent second anti-chiral jets , , and are the corresponding formal partial derivatives; their independence forces to be independent of all . Reality then makes it independent of as well, so is constant. A separate field-dependent coupling with as in [A4] remains distinct D-term data, not the field-independent FI coefficient. Therefore a correction to the constant FI coefficient is independent of the coupling spurions in [A3]. A bare FI insertion, held constant in [A3], is one-valent. If attached to another vertex its unique internal line is a bridge, so it cannot enter an interacting one-particle-irreducible correction. All remaining mass and interaction coefficients are variable spurions; a correction independent of them is computed by setting them to zero. Besides the canonical matter vertices, retain the pure gauge-kinetic vertices and scale all gauge-kinetic coefficients by as in step 5.1. For a connected coupling-independent correction with one external , and , hence the full condition is . Besides one or one , this allows one ghost vertex. Its external central Abelian gauge-boson leg vanishes since for a central generator ; it has no auxiliary leg either, so cannot correct the FI coefficient. The remaining possibilities are one or one vertex. The case cannot have an external Abelian prepotential: its curvature is linear, and invariance of each quadratic form gives for a central Abelian generator . The case has and its matter ends contract, giving precisely the one-loop tadpole. By the common-kernel hypothesis in [A4], its integral is the same for each chiral component, with the representation entering only through its charge. Writing its common value as , the correction is . This is a one-loop graph, so the correction vanishes when the charge sum is zero and there are no higher-loop FI graphs.
The argument constrains the remaining holomorphic integrand, matter-independent quadratic gauge-kinetic coefficients, and FI tadpole only; it places no equality requirement on the arbitrary real function in [F1] or on the real Kähler data in [F5]. Since the high-mode split retains momenta below and [A1] excludes nonperturbative sectors, no conclusion follows for an arbitrary one-particle-irreducible functional, instanton corrections, coefficients after field rescaling, or a continuum limit. These are exactly the qualifications in the statement.
