How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Local Wick diagonal products need additional prerequisites
Remarks
For a nonzero real , the local quartic functional is not in the regular polynomial class of Regular polynomial field functional algebra. Write for the distribution defined in The diagonal delta is a distribution supported on the diagonal, and define the diagonal kernel by The local quartic's second derivative at has this kernel. The verification below shows it is nonzero and cannot be a smooth compact coefficient kernel, so no other regular presentation can represent . The regular star product in Regular Wick-star contractions are well defined and associative and the formal time-ordering construction in Regular time-ordered contraction coefficients take regular polynomial functionals as inputs. Since is not in that class, neither construction applies to it. Extending either operation across the diagonal requires a separately stated and proved construction; no such extension or general causal-renormalization theorem is asserted on this page.
The nonzero hypothesis matters: if , then is the regular constant family with all coefficient kernels zero.

is real and nonzero.
A regular polynomial functional has smooth compactly supported symmetric coefficient kernels, with the displayed functional derivative kernels (Regular polynomial field functional algebra).
Symmetric coefficient representations are unique, and elementary product tests are dense in the test-function topology (Tensor-product tests are dense in smooth compact kernel topology).
is a continuous distribution supported on , pairing with as ; no nonzero smooth function is supported on this diagonal (The diagonal delta is a distribution supported on the diagonal).
Tests are smooth compactly supported functions (Test function space d of an open set).
A compact set has a smooth compact cutoff equal to one near it (Test function cutoffs and euclidean localization).
The support of a distribution is the complement of its largest open vanishing set (Support of a distribution).
The LF topology is characterized by seminorms whose restrictions to each fixed-support test space are continuous (Test function topology).
The regular contraction star product is defined for two elements of and a continuous bidistribution (Regular Wick-star contractions are well defined and associative).
Each and the resulting formal series are defined on regular polynomial inputs (Regular time-ordered contraction coefficients).
Verification
Given: [A1] and [F1]–[F9].
For real test directions , the coefficient of in is , by expanding . By [F3], this is exactly the pairing of with the product test . Thus represents the second derivative on product tests.
For every nonempty fixed compact , choose a compact rectangle containing its first-coordinate projection. Then so is continuous on each fixed-support test space and hence on the LF test topology by [F7]. It vanishes on every test supported off the diagonal, so its support is contained there by [F6]. Choose with using [F5], and set . This is a test function: its support has and , so both coordinate projections are compact. Then because a nonzero continuous real function is bounded away from zero on a small ball. Thus .
Suppose had a regular presentation. By [F1], its second derivative at would have a smooth compactly supported kernel. Its pairings with product tests agree with those of by step 1.1; complex linearity extends agreement to complex product tests, and density [F2] extends it to all tests. Hence the smooth kernel would equal as a distribution. Its support would be contained in the diagonal by step 2.1.
The diagonal has empty interior. A continuous function supported there must vanish: any nonzero value would persist on an open neighborhood not contained in the diagonal. This contradicts from step 2.1. Therefore has no regular presentation.
By step 4.1, . Fact [F8] defines only on pairs of regular polynomial functionals, and [F9] defines each on regular polynomial inputs. Neither operation therefore applies to . Any extension across the diagonal is a separate construction and is not proved here.
