How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Atiyah–Bott–Berline–Vergne Integration Formula
Statement
Work in . Let be a compact torus acting smoothly on a compact oriented smooth -manifold without boundary; use the standard Hausdorff, second-countable manifold convention, and assume the action preserves the orientation. Write for its fixed locus, with , and for each connected component. Give each normal bundle a -equivariant orientation and orient by . Use real Borel equivariant cohomology, , the multiplicative set generated by nonzero character classes, and the degree-shifting fiber-integration convention of the preceding definition. For every homogeneous ,
If the fixed locus is nonempty and consists of isolated points, necessarily . Use the ambient orientation on each normal space and the positive orientation on each point . Choose a -invariant complex structure on each and let be its nonzero character weights. Let when its complex orientation agrees with the orientation of at and otherwise. Then the same formula specializes to
If the fixed locus is empty, the fixed-component formula is the empty sum for every ; no parity condition or integer is needed in that case.
This is a finite-dimensional formula for compact manifolds; it does not assert a formula for arbitrary noncompact instanton spaces or infinite-dimensional field spaces.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: AC, a compact torus , a compact oriented smooth -manifold without boundary, , the specified fixed-component orientations, the local real Borel/Gysin/Euler conventions, and the proved Borel-localization input [L2] below.
Assume AC. It is inherited from the coefficient-ring supplier used by the local Borel conventions, whose proof invokes AC in its Künneth and coefficient arguments. The Axiom of Choice
Borel Equivariant Integration Conventions for the ABBV Formula: is Borel cohomology, is a polynomial domain under AC, is generated by nonzero character classes, and is the finite-stage duality construction, with coefficient-ring linearity, base restriction, and normalized Thom trace supplied by Construction and Thom Compatibility of Borel Fiber Integration.
Equivariant Thom-Gysin Identities for Fixed Submanifolds: for each fixed-component inclusion, , the restriction to a disjoint fixed component is zero, and over real Borel cohomology.
Fixed-Component Normal Euler Classes Become Invertible: the fixed locus is a finite union of compact smooth components, and every is a unit in , with the rank-zero case giving .
Borel localization for compact torus actions: the current carrier states that, under AC, for and a compact finite-dimensional Hausdorff second-countable smooth manifold without boundary, real Borel cohomology using the product right Milnor model has fixed-locus restriction isomorphism after localization at first Chern classes of nontrivial characters. We use only the real case. By the preceding definition, these character classes generate exactly , so this is the required isomorphism. The product right Milnor quotient, real coefficient normalization and nontrivial-character multiplicative set have been checked against the actual suppliers. This scoped use does not assert independent proof approval.
Proof
Localize the restriction map at . By [L2] it is an isomorphism in this compact smooth finite-type case. Let under .
By [F3], each is invertible after localization. Form ; the sum is finite because has finitely many components.
All maps and identities in [F2] are -linear and extend -linearly to the localized modules. For a component , pull back . The term is by the localized self-intersection identity; each term restricts to zero by the localized disjoint-support identity. Hence . Since the localized restriction map in step 1.1 is injective, .
The -linear pushforwards in [F1] and the identity in [F2] extend -linearly, so they apply to . Applying to step 3.1 gives , which is the fixed-component formula in the localized coefficient ring. If , [L2] says , so localizes to zero; because is a domain and every element of is nonzero, is injective and the empty sum is indeed zero. If a normal rank is zero, its Euler denominator is by [F3], so that term is the ordinary integral over that fixed component.
If is nonempty and each fixed component is a point , then has no trivial weight and hence . With the stated ambient normal and positive point orientations, its complex character-line decomposition has Euler class by [F1]. Substituting into step 4.1 and using yields the isolated-fixed-point formula. If , the product is empty and the same calculation reads as the sum of the oriented point evaluations. For empty , step 4.1 already gives zero in every dimension, without introducing .
